The world’s first space telescope celebrates a quarter century this week. NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope launched into orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery 25 years ago Friday, on April 24, 1990.

Take a break and get to know the stars!
This is NGC 281. It is a relatively nearby cloud of gas and dust that lies high above the plane of the Milky Way galaxy. Its location makes NGC 281 a good target for astronomers who want to study "high-mass" stars.

Information about the Chandra X-ray Observatory, which was launched on July 23, 1999, its mission and goals, and the people who built it.

Happy #EarthDay

This composite image of southern Africa and the surrounding oceans was captured by six orbits of the NASA/NOAA Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership spacecraft on April 9, 2015, by the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument. Tropical Cyclone Joalane can be seen over the Indian Ocean.

You can get a really high resolution version of this image here:

Truer words...

Neil deGrasse Tyson @neiltyson
Okay to not know. But when you don't know, yet think you know, and wield power in that ignorance, it's a recipe for disaster.

Death Star: The destruction of a planet may sound like the stuff of science fiction, but a team of astronomers has found evidence that this may have happened in an ancient cluster of stars at the edge of the Milky Way galaxy. Researchers using telescope, including our Chandra X-ray Observatory, have found evidence that a white dwarf star – the dense core of a star like the sun that has run out of nuclear fuel – may have ripped apart a planet as it came too close.
