Editor’s Note: As part of HART’s Celebration of ASPCA’s Help a Horse Day, HART sponsored an Art and Essay Contest for young people ages 10-13, requiring a short original essay and corresponding original illustration on the topic of “What does horse rescue mean to me?”. We received excellent and inspiring submissions and will be highlighting these submissions here on our blog over the next few days. We start today with the submission from our contest winner, Ms. Sarah Foy.

What Does Horse Rescue Mean to Me?

by Sarah Foy

“There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.” This quote from Winston Churchill perfectly depicts the meaning of horse rescue to me. A horse rescue is a safe haven for all. Horse rescues give horses a chance to be nurtured and loved after being neglected by their owners. Horse rescues also benefit humans because working with horses is a very relaxing and rewarding experience. When I get stressed out, working with horses really calms me down. And it also teaches me life skills such as independence and confidence. A horse rescue is the greatest alliance of humans and animals. When we give our love to horses, they radiate love back to us. To me, a horse rescue is a form of the greatest power on Earth, which can’t be harmed or broken. And that power is love.
