Service was great! Lee our server was fantastic and burgers were perfect. The location was off an alley and it felt like we had found a hidden gem. It was a memorable experience with my bride!

Ive had umami once before at a different location- and truth be told I was not impress to say the least. Although my boyfriend and the rest of the world tend to disagree with my picky taste bud! Anyways- I went last night with my friend, only because the other restaurant we were originally planning on going was close due to Easter (and this was the only other place we could think of going to.) We sat outdoors because it was a 20 minute wait to be seated inside and we were both starving like marvin... I went inside to use the restroom and to see what the big fuss was about? - I must say the Asian influence and the ambiance of the this location was alot more intriguing. With the clever Big Red Neon Sign written "Chow Fun" with the C not shining made me chuckle under my breath. I appreciated this and the spacious atmosphere it allowed its diners. so back to the food- I ordered the Portabello umami burger and the vanilla soda and we shared the String fries.. I forgot what my friend ordered but my burger was too sweet in my opinion and felt like i was eating more of a dessert than a meal, not to mention the burger was tiny! needless to say we both left dissatisfy and still hungry.

Umami Burger, named after the 5th taste, needs to work a little harder on the first 4. I ordered the port and stilton burger. I was informed of their Draconian policies on charging for ketchup and their inability to substitute anything on any of the burgers. When I finally received my food, I wondered why the place wasn't called Umami Slider because that's what you get here for $14: one slider (assuming you didn't pay for ketchup, of course). It would be one thing if the "burger" was some spectacular blend of flavor that left me full of desire for another, but it was, in a word, "salty". All I could taste was the blue cheese. That's right, it wasn't even stilton, and I'm offended that they think people wouldn't know the difference. As for the service, I noticed that the well dressed business men seated next to me got the whole low down on all the specials and desserts, while I got a curt "Do you know what you want?" Yes, I want to go back and time and go anywhere else for a burger.

The Truffle Burger is delicious! I found myself sopping up the dripping from the burger and cheese with the rest of my sandwich. The Manly Fries were good, too, with plenty to share with my wife. The only fault I had with this place was that they cooked my burger to medium-well when I asked for it to be medium-rare. Still great though.

What can I say. The burgers are amazing, tasty, and juicy. The ambiance makes it an excellent place to chill with friends although parking is a bit hard to come by.

Pretty good burger...certainly a unique flavor profile. Service was not bad - the typical "super laid back in L.A." thing, which I sometimes prefer over the swarming uniformity of many NYC establishments. With that said, I do find the "LA" attitude often boarders on indifference, impacting my ability to tip at my normal percentages; generally resulting in this unshakable feeling that the establishment, and staff, are allowing me to spend my money there rather than feeling thankful I have chosen to do so. In any event, if you find yourself in LA, stop by and check this place out and do sit outside, especially if bands are playing in the courtyard.

The best meal I've had in months, and I'm a relatively gluttonous person. I cannot recommend the "Cheesy Tater Tots" on the secret menu ENOUGH. They are outstanding and the sauces that come with every meal make each bite a mini-vacation. Make sure to get there a little early if going during a peak time, as it's pretty crowded and will have a wait. But you should definitely go.
