Engage & Empower Me MOOC: Defining Patient Engagement

Christian Dinesen: Practical announcement - Following this course I need to know practical details about how to do assignments in order to receive the complimentary credits and pass the the course. I cant find where to access and I dont see a help function where I can write this for help. Thank you!

Scott Johnson: Was unable to watch the whole video, partly because the money thing for a Canadian like myself is currently irrelevant. My situation is driven by living 3 hours away from my specialists and having entered the medical system twice by the ambulance door. Because of this plus my option to take treatments at a clinic an hour closer to my home which has disconnected me from the main clinic.

As both a heart and cancer patient I feel doubly lost to either system and essentially exist on my own ability to survive alone. As my family doctor works in a clinic (only one less than 2 hours away that provides no coverage when she's away. Nor do they allow emergency access to her so I no longer consider a resource. Local hospital is useless as they practice only emergency protocols and don't do chronic cases. Could go on but essentially I'm so invisible to the system that "my cardiologist", whose office is right down the hall from ICU, never even heard I'd been airlifted in, died, been resuscitated, operated on, held for 2 weeks and released with no back-up care. I've seen her once in the last 2 years and even thought this was second heart failure and I'm on a critical watch list there's no way to get past her receptionist so she's as irrelevant to me at my once seen oncologist.

As far as I can tell, the whole medical system exists for itself and to talk of "engagement" is basically a public relations falsehood invented by the same people who brought us the "Mission Statement" diversion from reality.
