Wait...is in-character poetry not a thing that everyone does?
When I was a kid I wrote fanfic poetry about a video game jester named Chuckles. Read more about that kind of stuff at feliciadaybook.com.
Good day.

My suica is at ¥0xFF. Now I don't want to charge it because it would screw that up. #nerdproblems

tl;dr: "Engineering is tradeoffs; the point of this essay is more to raise awareness of the tradeoffs than to argue that any one rule of practice is always right."

This essay in particular is about the giflib library, but it underscores something more fundamental. I would say that engineering is a series of tradeoffs; there are some that are easy to estimate (trading one algorithm for another) and others that are hard (coding one algorithm vs. another, cost of technical debt, etc.).

The best line of the article? "Document, document, document". Something that is highly overlooked in computer science is good documentation. More important than doing a thing is stating why you do one thing instead of another thing. Even if future generations don't agree with your choice, they'll at least know why you made it.
