Hi Tom,
Calico, barred and redtail perch are very similar in size and shape.  The barred has very obvious bars down it's side.  The calico is more spotted.  The red tail surfperch has no bars but the dorsal and other fins are a light pink color.  Also the redtail is very silver and has a much thinner skin than the barred/calico.  Much more like a walleye perch.  Most redtail that I have caught are north of Pismo beach.  The best spot I've ever seen for them is north of San Francisco toward Crescent City and up the Oregon Coast.  On my "Surf Fish" page there is a good picture of one at www.fishthesurf.com

Tom, it's been great up that way.  Be prepared for some big perch.  A great bait now is ghost shrimp, lug/blood worms and sidewinder crabs.  Let us know how you do!

Rafael, be sure to check out my website www.fishthesurf.com.  It has quite a few tips on surf fishing.  Also, get a copy of my book from my store or at almost any tackle store.  I've packed it full of info about how to find fish at the beach, baits, tackle, tides and everything surf fishing...
