I am thrilled and honored to have two paintings as finalists in the Art Renewal Center's annual Salon competition. ARC's standards are the highest, and this is some of the very best company to keep – in an endeavor (realism) already undergoing a kind of second Renaissance. Big, deep-bowing congratulations to all my comrade finalists, and the richly-deserving winners!

Here's an idea: We have no moon colonies today because science fiction authors have been slacking off in imaginative optimism for a couple of decades. Epic science fiction writer Neal Stephenson is starting The Heiroglyph project -- a compendium of science fiction writers creating an anthology around a "No hackers, no hyperspace, no holocaust" set of guidelines. Coming out in 2014. I personally can't wait! Till then, I'll continue to take a pass on Hunger Games...

His seminal article on the topic is here:http://www.worldpolicy.org/journal/fall2011/innovation-starvation
