Planning to walk away from a mortgage? Not so fast....

Juiciest quote:

A credit union, after selling one of the foreclosed houses for less than the debt on it, obtained a deficiency judgment against Ms. Ingham for $181,059.54. She worries she could face such judgments on the other properties, too.

Ms. Ingham says when she bought them, she misunderstood how much her investments put her on the hook for. Her builder, she says, promised she could invest $10,000 in four properties and then flip them for a profit. Ms. Ingham says deficiency judgments punish borrowers who were taken advantage of by lenders and builders.

Having that cloud hanging over you for 20 years can't be fun.

Very cool graphic about our country's financial mess. Very interesting trends and correlations all in one place. Edward Tufte would be proud.

Mac OS X Leopard Server tip of the day....

Are you having slow ssh logins to your Mac OS X Leopard Server? Have you turned off DNS resolution and GSSAPI key negotiation in sshd_config to no avail?

Well, you may be experiencing an apparent problem with the Leopard kernel's implementation of the autofs file system. While launchd is doing it's work, it opens the file /dev/autofs_nowait. This file is a special device that's monitored by the autofs filesystem implementation in the kernel. When opened, the autofs filesystem will not block that process on any I/O operations on an autofs file system.

Apparently, the point is to make sure launchd never accidentally hangs on an auto-mount filesystem while doing it's work.

The problem is that there is some sort of leak or other issue with this feature in that over time, it takes longer and longer to open() this device. This is most apparent when trying to login using ssh.

Our solution? Well, since we don't use any automount file systems, we just did the following:

cd /dev ; sudo mv autofs_nowait autofs_nowait.orig ; sudo ln -s null autofs_nowait

sshd (and I would imagine some other services managed by launchd) really fly now.

Nerd break:

An infinite number of mathematicians walk into a bar. The first one tells the bartender he wants a beer. The second one says he wants half a beer. The third one says he wants a fourth of a beer. The bartender puts two beers on the bar and says “You guys need to learn your limits.

That's a good point. And given the anti-government mood lately, I wonder what percentage of that freelance work is going unreported - i.e. a service black-market?
