after some data, i decided all "free" social media was essentially corporate manipulation of my attention - even g+. it's not you guys, it's them. i stepped away, and it's been better mentally.

we're in nyc with the boys - having a great time. this photo is from the (free) staten island ferry yesterday. it's not symbolic, it's just a cool photo. in a better world, we just share the prints and put the negatives in a box.

this... is mind-blowing.

i foresee a technical communism where we all squeeze into a compliant, narrow economic band. and maybe that's not bad. we're feeding more people than ever, we have lowest violence per 100k ever (trending downward) and we mostly all have instant access to broad and deep information. plus we each carry this fun, little, magical device that hardly costs anything given what it does.

probably the main reason economists hate piketty is that they mostly come from families that enjoy family wealth (and pay much lower taxes on any gains they get)

but the circumstantial evidence that r>g abounds. from the article:

Some deals involve existing assets, like taking stakes in airports or major shipping ports with the aim of building up value and then locking in profits with a sale.

it's not like they'll work on these projects or become employees at these sites, but they will "lock in profits." hmmm...

joon-ho is sooo good - i look forward to this! and i can watch it whenever the eff i want as soon as it releases. it's the future!

kinda similar funny story about watching a film in france... gus van sant's "last days" in paris... about 20 minutes into it, some guy stands up and starts screaming at the movie. he's talking so fast we have no idea what he's saying. the film stops, lights go up, and a guy comes out, and, in lightspeed french, talks for like five minutes. when he stops, everyone gets up and leaves - except us. then he comes over, super nice, and says, "ah, you don't speak french?" he explains the print was slightly imperfect and he's offered everyone a refund so we just need to go a special line at the box office to get it. and then he profusely apologizes for the print's inferior quality. wow

yesterday's times did not explain why the mayor threw her under a bus. here's some background from last year

no one, it seems, is lesser than the experts nowadays. is this a side effect of our constant, ready access to google mcinfo? agency is often a force against equity - not always - it's super complex. you may hate a bureaucracy for curtailing your agency, but the fact is that they train for years to balance the complex subtlety and constrained resources of a larger, totally unfair society. they're trained to see what we cannot.

this is total bs! outside of nyc and la, these films barely get a screening as two or three prints rep their way around the country for a weekend (or two) showing. in the new model they're way more accessible. netflix is awesome - greatest thing for cinephiles in 20 years.

now you can argue that maybe there is too much content and this generates a lot of noise, but this is an embarrassment of riches. tho' even a half-hearted attempt to read the great pro & amateur critics leads to an endless stream of treasure.

(i've seen probably 100-150 films/yr for well over 20 years - and i'm so done with film festivals and other useless gate-keeper crap of the old model)
