Review - Rob Ewing, The Last Of Us

I must admit I was a bit perturbed by the fact that the characters in the story were all children, because the story is dystopian. Nobody wants to think about that - its not pleasant, but I stuck with it.
Obviously it has parallels with Lord of the flies. There have been a myriad of stories about the world ending with a virus. In some ways, the story is very standard. But the angle of the story is very different, seen through a childs eyes. The concept of writing a story thats about a group of children is in itself quite a difficult task, without it falling back on a standard device like rite of passage etc. In some ways its a bit like an Eynid Blyton novel through the looking glass.
As a story it works brilliantly. I read the book in a few days, and was completely gripped. Great visualising and well thought out details. A compelling sense of escapism and vicarious experience of normality turned upside down.
