45 years ago today, Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovered the first pulsar, a fast rotating neutron star that emits a regular beam of radiation. 

A graduate student at the time, Jocelyn picked up this radiation as a regular blip in the data coming in to the Mullard Radio Astronomy Observatory in Cambridge, pictured below. Her supervisor Antony Hewish, along with Martin Ryle, went on to win a Nobel prize for the work.
