Tamalpais Breeze Marin County California (expand post for details)

NEW! Click on all my photos to [Actions/Download] the 1920 pixel-wide version!

We are nearing the time in California where you can see high clouds and low fog at the same time. It also happens in April and May. Imagine this photo without the higher clouds. Not as interesting, is it? See this big, the thumb does not do it justice!

Details

Canon 5D
Canon 17-40L @ 25
1-second exposure @F22
ISO 50
2 Lee soft grad filters (4x6 inch, 100x150mm, 0.9, 3-stop)
No polarizer.
RAW file processed with Capture One by Phase One
TIFF file processed with Photoshop cs4
Small Slik Sprint mini II tripod
Manfrotto 322RC2 pistol-grip ball head

The Story
A strong breeze and long exposure time softened the flowing grasses and trees on Mt. Tamalpais. It also pushed the fog rapidly through the Golden Gate and into the bay this evening. I used a 1-second exposure to show lots of more motion. Here, I also had to shelter the camera and tripod with my body in order to avoid camera shake.

Below the fog, the situation seemed bleak, but I knew the fog layer was low. It is amazing when you break out of the cool damp fog and into the bright warm dry air. It was probably 85F (30c) at this spot while it was 64F (17c) in the fog. Sometimes you can feel a cool breath of fog pass by. On the California coast, the fog is not the kind that forms in still air. This fog moves fast, like a river below you. If you ever get a chance to see this spectacle, do it! There is nowhere on the planet that puts on the kind of displays that this place does. I'm not kidding!

My pictures are featured on the front page of California Governor, Jerry Brown's website http://gov.ca.gov

Resources

I wrote a 325 eBook that describes exactly how I went about learning photography starting in 2006. I did not learn the usual way. I have studied the great masters of painting and hope to find that light in the real world.

A great weather mashup map of the world with local temperatures, weather and nice popups. See where it is hot and not! (Must wait for slow commercials first, but worth it!)

Google Earth
http://earth.google.com/

Simply the best way to scout out locations that there is. You can see sun angles and pre-visualize light under lots of different conditions. Sometimes you can actually pre-compose your shots! This has saved me many thousands of vertical feet of climbing by avoiding spots with blocked views etc.

Satellite imagery (choose 'National' for a local US region or use your fave website)

Tide charting and preditions: (chose your area in US, other countries have similar websites)

Wave Heights (I choose 'North Pacific from Global')

Photos of every inch of the California coastline from a small plane. Excellent for close in detailed views.
