I'm running a webcast with O'Reilly tomorrow, showing how to replicate +Yann LeCun's pioneering MNIST digit recognition deep learning work using the Caffe open-source project:

Join me, and please spread the word to anyone's who's interested!

I just had a long chat with Derrick Higgins of GigaOm about deep learning, which he turned into this post:
http://gigaom.com/2014/04/24/democratizing-deep-learning-with-an-iphone-app-and-open-source-sdk/ It's been great to see non-developers playing with the technology now the demo app's available on the iPhone app store. Thanks as always to Geoffrey Hinton, +Yann LeCun, and all the other folks who pioneered the approach. I've been having so much fun with it myself, I hope this helps more people dive in!

I've just released a free library for running deep learning image recognition on iOS devices, running on-device in under 300ms. Give it a try and let me know how you get on, I'm looking forward to see what apps people can build with this!

Why deep belief matters so much - http://radar.oreilly.com/2014/03/why-deep-belief-matters-so-much.html
I've got a demo of the full Krizhevsky deep learning architecture running in Javascript to accompany it too:

Thanks +Yann LeCun  +Geoffrey Hinton and all the other folks whose work has helped me understand the technique, it's been a lot of fun getting this working!

I dig into accountability for software bugs, how Netflix uses GPUs on EC2 for neural networks, how data correlations are often unusable for practical applications, the downsides to Vagrant, and highlight +Yann LeCun's fun interview on AI and deep learning.

Our house came with a horned effigy of Bacchus on the deck (it is in the Castro, so I wasn't too surprised), my sister's Christmas present seems to make a great earring for him.

I'm a bad, bad plusser, at least as a creator of content. I'm still doing a fair amount of reading, which is funny since that's the opposite of my experience on Twitter, that's mostly focused on conversations and posting, rather than browsing.

Anyway, I wanted to make sure everyone with an iPad knew that we've launched Jetpac:
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/jetpac-friends-photo-travel/id511518050?mt=8 It's pretty great, even TechCrunch says so!
http://techcrunch.com/2012/04/10/jetpac-for-ipad-lets-you-explore-the-world-through-your-friends-eyes/
And yes, I have Google+ support under the hood, just working out the best way to expose it.

One of the delights of pulling the +Jetpac team together has been discovering people's hidden talents. It turns out that our community manager +Cathrine Lindblom Gunasekara has a knack for uncovering fascinating travel pictures and movies, and she's been blogging up a storm:
https://plus.google.com/115302936601664291726/posts

Google+'s format shows off her photo-laden posts, and it's been surprisingly effective at reaching people too, so if you're interested in how to effectively use the service as a startup I recommend checking out Cathrine's work! Beware though, you might lose some time to travel day-dreaming if you start browsing...
