August 5th update:

MyJul / JulCroft fandom, we have an update about our engagement etc. 💍🏳️‍🌈💍

As you probably saw here, after almost 9 years of partnership, we got Facebook-officially engaged in April, yay.

I have always wanted to get engaged and married to someone, and to Julia since I met her. However, I wanted to have an (inter)faith-based wedding, and not a legal marriage. I am not a fan of legal marriage, or of the mainstream LGBTQ movement’s support of it. But, it has its advantages, and it seems time we took advantage of that -- especially now that Julia has a job with benefits I can benefit from, and we caretake her mother. And though we are both legally female, we can now legally marry anywhere in the country -- and the latter might change.

If I did need to get legally married, I had hoped to have a wedding at or around the same time, and minimize the legal aspect. But, we are not financially or otherwise logistically ready for a wedding, and we don’t know when we will be. And that’s okay -- though also challenging for me to accept and navigate, especially as I realize how many people haven’t really had to think about this. (Which is the primary reason I’m talking about it here -- to educate, and to encourage people who feel the way I do.)

In May, I went to the MoCo Circuit Court and got us a marriage license -- which expires in six months if the couple doesn’t have it finalized, by the court or someone else. On Monday September 10th, we will go to the court together and have them finalize it. The next day, Tuesday September 11th, we will celebrate the 9th anniversary of our meeting in person for the first time (we first met in an online fat and allied community in July 2009). And Rosh Hashanah begins at sunset on Sunday September 9th, so we will be getting married on New Year’s Day of Jewish year 5779 (many don’t consider this kosher, I consider it especially so).

Also in September, we will have some sort of mini-honeymoon, probably here in MoCo and/or Frederick. In October, we will have a more-honeymoony week of vacation in Virginia Beach.

Also also in September, we will start wearing wedding rings, which we have just finally chosen. And in April, Julia gave me a perfect engagement necklace. I am interested in having an engagement ring, she is not. My first choice was a family one, but there don’t seem to be any available. I am also researching artists who make jewelry out of people’s and pets’ cremains. And of course I’ll keep an eye out while thrifting etc.

And we will continue to explore our options for a wedding and related events. But we will consider ourselves married as of September 10th -- I believe that we, and any couple, can become married by deciding amongst themselves that they are, even if they never make any faith-based and/or legal arrangements (and couples can make arrangements and not consider themselves married). We’ll primarily use the word “spouse”, though I’ve never found it enjoyable.

We asked our dogter, Ursula, the Pugston Terrier, about all of this...and she said we should consider ourselves extremely fortunate that she even allows her servants to marry, never mind take any time off from her service to celebrate. So...there’s that. 🐕

Nu, celebrate as you think best, here and elsewhere. And stay tuned for more celebratory news. And as always, thank you for your support of our family. <3
