NEW PROJECTS LAUNCHED!

In September, Sport 4 Life is proud to have launched 3 new charitable projects for the benefit of disadvantaged children and young people in Birmingham. In the east of the city, a new programme of youth club and sports coaching activities will help tackle youth anti-social behaviour and unrest on the Stockfield Estate in Acocks Green. Further north, a new partnership with the Affinity Sutton Housing Association in Alum Rock will see 8-18 year olds get involved positively in their community through a sports and education programme, while in central Birmingham 240 children from 8 primary schools will improve their behaviour through the “More Than Sport” project. In the beginning of October, thanks to a grant of £289,768 from the Big Lottery Fund, we also commenced the Be Positive project – our flagship initiative that provides a sports-themed educational programme to young people in the inner city ward of Ladywood.

Sport 4 Life coach David Johnson is celebrating the experience of a lifetime, after returning from London where he carried the Olympic Torch! David was one of 8,000 inspirational people across the country who were given the honour of carrying the Torch, as it journeyed throughout the UK, travelling within 15 miles of 95% of the entire population. David was nominated for showing a remarkable commitment to delivering top quality sports coaching sessions in Birmingham’s most disadvantaged areas, including those affected by the recent civil unrest and riots. His enthusiasm and passion rub off on participants and his love for sport is infectious. His biggest asset is his ability to use sport as a tool to encourage personal development amongst his participants, a key vision for Sport 4 Life. After his torch-bearing experience, David said: “Carrying the Torch in the heart of the Olympic Games city was one of the best moments of my life and something I’ll never forget. The experience has definitely inspired me to continue helping Sport 4 Life to change lives through the power of sport.”

Matthew Chown – Sport 4 Life’s 26 year old Fundraising Champion – commenced the journey of a lifetime this October. His mission, named the 24 Marathon Challenge, is to complete the South West Coast Path in 4 weeks – that’s a whopping 24 marathons in 28 days, not to mention 35,000 metres of ascent, 26,719 steps, 921 stiles and 302 bridges along the way. He started at South Haven Point in Poole on Monday 1st October, and by Sunday 28th October will have walked the 630 miles to Minehead. Matthew is undertaking the challenge to raise money for Sport 4 Life, and has set a target of raising £2,012. He said: “The 24 Marathon Challenge will be an epic journey and an amazing experience. I am looking forward to it with both excitement and trepidation. I am going to have put my body through a lot, and it is definitely going to be physically and mentally draining.” To make a donation to Matthew’s challenge text SWCP99 £2 / £5 / £10 to 70070.

Welcome to the official Sport 4 Life UK Google+ page! Award winning sports charity in Birmingham, UK. Changing Lives Through The Power Of Sport.
Introduction
In the city of Birmingham, an estimated 50,000 children and young people live in the 5% most deprived areas nationally. Sport 4 Life is the award-winning charity that changes the lives of these disadvantaged children and young people through the power of sport.

We work with 8-16 year olds who have struggled at school, endured difficult home lives, or developed behavioural issues, and with 16-25 year olds who have experienced long-term unemployment or been in trouble with the law. Yet despite these challenging backgrounds, Sport 4 Life believes every child and young person has the ability to make a positive change in their lives and to be a success story. We provide a helping hand on this journey through our sports-themed educational programmes. These programmes support children and young people to achieve something tangible – to build their confidence, develop their life skills, improve their health, transform their behaviour, gain a qualification, or find a job – and ultimately to reach their true potential for the future.
