In the back of my mind I always knew there was a literary version of shouting "I've never seen Star Wars, sorry you're mad about it" for attention, but I never went looking for it.
Earlier this year, fantasy author V.E. Schwab delivered the sixth annual J.R.R. Tolkien Lecture on Fantasy Literature at Pembroke College, Oxford, in which she defends her decision to never have read anything by Tolkien because she hates reading books she is expected to read.
She then goes on at length about how reading Harry Potter was transformative to her life through the power of fantasy.
