Pshh. I know what this is. That's an easy one.

I learned all about it in Phantasy Star 4. The one on the Sega Genesis.

See, videogames are useful.

I think the "super-earth" hypothesis is just the juiciest option so it gets into the headline.
A potential super-Earth could lurk on the outer edge of our solar system.

It's amazing... The length and breadth of effort required so that a super-tree of birds can be drawn up. Even if this isn't the end-all be-all of super-trees, still -- so many different people, over so much time, in so many disciplines. So many papers, so many mistakes, so many...birds?

If you, like me, are trying to find English-translation copies of older physics papers from Soviet Physics JETP, look no further. The Awesome Sauce is right here.

Wow...Five years circling the Sun to get a second chance at Venus...And it paid off.

After a nail-biting maneuver to send Japan’s Akatsuki spacecraft into orbit around Venus, we’re celebrating their success. This spacecraft will learning more about Venus’ perpetual cloud layer, its thick atmosphere, possible volcanic and lightning activity, and its fiery surface at 864 degrees Fahrenheit. We’ve partnered with the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to provide navigation assistance and use of our Deep Space Network. Learn more: http://go.nasa.gov/1RaEvZl

As long as it's not Ice-9.

And...really...lucy in the sky with Q-carbon? ...Just doesn't work.

The known phases of carbon pertains to the familiar graphite and diamond, as they are distinct forms of the same material. But this time around, researchers at the North Carolina State University have made a momentous discovery by finding a brand new phase of solid carbon which is termed as Q-carbon. And the really interesting part is – they have also showcased how this new (and extremely rare) phase of carbon can be utilized to create cheap diamonds at room temperature with only ambient atmospheric pressure.
Researchers at the North Carolina State University have discovered Q-carbon, a new carbon phase that is harder than even diamond.

Introduction
I'm in theoretical physics, condensed matter specifically.

As a scientist, I don't put much stock in "Science for the sake of Science." To me, this seems like self-satisfaction, despite the possibility that science could make a very big difference in humankind's long-term survival. For the sake of what, then? Well, I don't think any one person is wise enough to decide that...

I aim for my posts to be about physical, tangible things in just about any area of science.

But also: comic books.
