I started using costumes in my therapy sessions. I find that make-believe, princess and soldier costumes help to transcend the "therapeutic" aspect of the work into the play realm. Whenever we lose ourselves in the moment, because we are so inspired to create make-believe, the work is more enjoyable. The balance and coordination can occur with greater ease.

I started to video tape some of my children in slow motion with my I phone to analyze their gait. It is so helpful to watch them walk slow enough to see what could be improved.

I started to work with a new child yesterday. He was 5 years-old and unable to walk without holding someone's hand due to his ataxia. More apparent to me was that his therapists over the years, in their eagerness to get him up to walk, allowed him to walk without the proper reflexes for falling. If the baby/toddler, cannot catch themselves in sitting, or kneeling, they should not be encouraged to walk. Safe walking can only be achieved as the child learns where they are in space and how to catch themselves if they fall. Putting them in standing and walking before they can safely stand on their own is very dangerous and difficult to undo after they get used to standing and walking, no matter how unsafe. It is better to establish good balance and self awareness first!
