Five Ways to Prevent Serious Skin Sensitivity

There’s no one trigger responsible for causing sensitive skin. Sometimes it is the culmination of environmental stressors, products and treatments that create reactive skin. The good news: sensitivity issues can be addressed and the effects can be reversed. Follow these protective and preventative measures to strengthen the skin’s barrier function, limiting the incidence of sensitive reactions.

1. Stay out of the sun. The sun can cause the skin to become extremely sensitive, especially if you have a sensitivity-related skin condition like rosacea. Be sure to protect your skin every day with an SPF of at least 30.

2. Avoid synthetic and artificial ingredients. If your skin becomes inflamed and irritated when fragranced and preservative-packed products are used, avoid them at all costs.

3. Keep your skin well-hydrated. When the skin is void of moisture, the barrier can’t function optimally and the skin can’t naturally protect itself as well. “If the surface of the skin is well-hydrated, it heals faster. A healthy epidermis means a healthy dermis and vice versa. Hydrate inside out with water and omega-3 and outside in with a good moisturizer,” says New York aesthetician Julia March.

4. Build up a tolerance. When it comes to using a new product or ingredient (especially those that are known to cause irritation and sensitivity like retinol and glycolic acid), start slow and let your skin adjust.

5. Strengthen the barrier. Certain cleansers, like those that are formulated as soaps or have stripping acids and alcohols, can diminish the barrier function of the skin. When the barrier is compromised, the skin is more vulnerable to experiencing irritations, sensitivity and other reactions.

Below is a list on how to recover from unexpected breakouts, puffy eyes and wrinkles caused by the hectic holidays so you can feel beautiful in 2013.

(Breakouts) Because the holidays are a busy time, many women don't pay as much close attention to their skin as they do normally. That, coupled with inflammation, is a surefire way to get unexpected breakouts. To get back on track, reboot your skin with a facial to clear out your pores. Also make sure to be diligent with chemical exfoliation. Look for a product with beta hydroxy acid, which has anti-inflammatory properties to reduce redness. It also kills acne-causing bacteria.

(Puffy eyes) Alcohol, salty foods and holiday parties have likely made your eyes (and skin) puffier than usual. To deflate your eyes and make them look more awake, start by eating clean. Limit your intake of sodium, coffee, soda and processed foods. Instead, flush out your body with anti-inflammatory foods—think fruits, vegetables, salmon and un-salted nuts, and by drinking plenty of water. Apply a serum or moisturizer loaded with antioxidants around your eyes to combat dryness. Dryness in the skin contributes to swelling, which can make your eye area appear more wrinkled and tired-looking. Finally, to help prevent fluid retention in the eye area, try to sleep with your head slightly elevated. Then in the morning, gently massage around the puffy areas of your eyes with your fingertips to help relieve swelling.

(Wrinkles)Though wrinkles are primarily caused by sun damage, other factors make them more noticeable like sweets, stress and drinking. Of course, eating clean and flushing your body with water is the first step to rehydrate your skin and lessen the appearance of wrinkles. Good topical hydration is key as well. The New Year is also a great time to talk to your dermatologist about wrinkle-smoothing options like prescription retinoids and injectables.

Regardless of the size and shape of your body, it is the greatest tool you will ever own. Without it, you wouldn’t be alive. How you take care of it or fail to take care of it can make an enormous difference in the quality of your life. Exercise to be fit, not skinny. Eat to nourish your body. To truly be your best, you must give your body the fuel it needs. Toss the junk and fill your kitchen with fresh, whole foods. Run, swim, bike, walk – sweat! Good health is essential for having the energy, stamina and outlook to tackle your goals and dreams.
