While we have been focusing (and rightly so!) on the heroin and opiate epidemic, U.S. cocaine overdose deaths are at a 10-year high, and between 2013 and 2015 the number of young Americans who said they used cocaine for the first time increased by 61 percent! And alcohol-related deaths are still too prevalent. Is the answer on how to deal with these problems the Criminal Justice system, or are there better alternatives?

Make sure you know: decriminalized is FAR from legal - the trap is set.

Eyes wide shut?? I’m a firm believer that we as a people need to start looking more closely at laws and the building blocks/contextual stories behind them, rather than accepting laws at face value simply because they are laws. After all, “skeptical scrutiny is the means…by which deep thoughts can be widowed from deep nonsense.” – Carl Sagan. PLEASE GIVE THIS A READ - David Z.

SZA firm has awards and accolades too long to list in a single post and it is because we work day in and day out to provide new avenues to assist our clients. We know that much of what people have to discuss with us is hard to do over the phone because people may overhear. That is why we are one of the few firms to offer live chat from 9-5. With the hit of one button you can comfortably and PRIVATELY chat with us about whatever is going on from the comfort of your computer or device. Check it out! We are bending over backwards to help people before they've become our client; image what happens once we're retained. http://szafirm.com

The legalities related to marijuana are a fascination of mine. It pains me to see people being locked in cages for the use of a plant that needs no processing. It seems unconscionable to me that anyone could lose their life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for picking a bud off a plant and putting it in his/her pocket. As if that is not bizarre enough, people are being put in cages for using a substance that is flat out legal in 8 states including Washington DC; 28 other states permit the medical use of marijuana. I am intellectually allergic to inconsistency and I firmly believe the law should be devoid of it. Aside from the obvious problem with people being jailed in Maryland for a substance that is legal miles south in the nation’s capital; there are a plethora of nuanced inconsistencies related to marijuana law in Maryland that must be exposed.

This article is aimed at unpacking some of the oddities to help people better understand what to avoid, what their kids should avoid, and what to watch for at the ballot boxes in the coming years.

Enjoy! David Zwanetz, Esq.

When Managing Partner, Jason A. Shapiro, served the state of Maryland as a prosecuting attorney with the Office of the State’s Attorney for Howard County, he was given the opportunity to become Supervisor of the Auto Manslaughter Unit. During his tenure prosecuting at-fault driver’s who under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or otherwise, took a life, Jason learned valuable lessons. He worked closely with Accident Reconstructionists, doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, pathologists and unfortunately, medical examiners. While a prosecutor, Jason never lost in auto manslaughter case.

A Humble and Heartfelt THANK YOU!

Jason, David, and all the staff of Shapiro Zwanetz & Associates ("SZA") is humbly and genuinely appreciative for your continued referrals, good wishes, and overall support. There is no better feeling to hear feedback from clients, witnesses, other attorneys, judges, police officers, probation agents, and others with whom our paths may have crossed. And of course, the ultimate compliment is when potential clients hear that feedback in the form of a referral to our office. SZA relies upon referrals as nearly 9 out of every 10 clients that we represent come to our firm by being referred to us! So thank you! Thank you for your past support, and hopefully, we can count on your continued referrals for those in need of representation for Criminal and/or Traffic Defense, Juvenile Delinquency matters, or any Personal Injury/Medical Malpractice claim.
