Today in 1510, Saint Francis Borgia was born. He was 4th Duke of Gandia and grandson of Pope Alexander VI. He became a member of the Jesuit priesthood after the death of his wife, refused a cardinals hat, founded the collegium romanum (a university for priests), sent missionaries to distant lands and offered advise to both kings and Popes. So good were his works that he was canonised in 1670 and for a long time had his very own feast day. Sadly that day was removed from the Roman Catholic calendar in 1969. And Francis Borgia was probably the only person in the Borgia family to escape with his reputation intact (though I still think Lucrezia deserves none of the hate and bad rep she gets!)
