Danielle Goodrich, writing in Oregon Sea Grant's Watershed and Invasive Species Education blog, summarizes the devastation invasive, predatory lionfish (Pterois volitans) are wreaking on marine ecosystems of the Atlantic Ocean, and cites a recent Oregon State University study offering some hope that these beautiful yet voracious fish might be controlled without complete eradication. Like the rest of the WISE Blog, Danielle's article offers resources for K-12 teachers who want to incorporate invasive species education into their science lessons.

Our newest K-8 lesson plan uses the popular "Stone Soup" comic to teach about the perils of releasing non-native classroom lab "pets" into the wild. Just in time to be featured at the National Science Teachers Association meeting later this week! (Know a STEM teacher? Spread the word about this free classroom resource!)

Oregon Sea Grant's Pat Corcoran talks about his work as a tsunami preparedness educator on the Oregon Coast, as the NOAA Sea Grant Website observes National Tsunami Awareness Week. If you live on, or visit, a seismically active coast, know what to do if the ground rumbles or a tsunami alert is sounded!

Oregon Sea Grant's Eric Dickey - an accomplished poet and story teller when he's not providing admin and communications support to our team - has a new children's picture-book out that blends adventure and science. Check it out!

Coastal science serving Oregon
Introduction

Oregon Sea Grant serves the state, region and nation through integrated research, education and public engagement on ocean and coastal issues.

We apply the best available science to timely and important issues, and engage with coastal stakeholders to help them reach informed decisions. We support scientific excellence and innovation, foster new generations of marine scientists, and encourage ocean science literacy among people of all ages.

Based at Oregon State University, we're part of the national network of NOAA Sea Grant College Programs, dedicated to promoting environmental stewardship, long-term economic development and responsible use of America’s coastal, ocean and Great Lakes resources.
