HIV-1 is the most common type of virus that develops into AIDS. HIV-1 plants its genome permanently into peoples' DNA, which makes it mandatory for infected patients to take lifelong medication to regulate the virus and prevent an attack.
In a recent study, researchers developed molecular tools, a combination of a DNA-snipping enzyme called a nuclease and a targeting strand of RNA called a guide RNA (gRNA), which can be used to hunt down and erase the HIV-1 proviral DNA.
