By the early 1800s, Castine was a busy shipbuilding town and a vital entrepot with a bustling harbor. In 1829, U.S. Government established the Dice Head Lighthouse to mark the port.

Although mariners regarded #RocklandHarbor as one of the finest on the East Coast, its copious opening was also a liability. From 1881 to 1899, the Army Corps of Engineers erected a significant breakwater, affording protection to ships at anchor, and by 1902, the #Rockland Breakwater #Lighthouse marked the entrance to the harbor.

When navigating the #Kennebec River, there comes a point, just before reaching the city of Bath, where mariners need to make two 90-degree turns. To ensure that vessels were in the center of the channel, the #DoublingPoint Range Lights, sometimes known as the Kennebec River Range Lights, were established in 1898. Read the #history of the Doubling Point Range Lights.

High atop a rocky promontory in West Penobscot Bay, marking the south side of the entrance to Rockland Harbor stands the Owls Head Lighthouse. Some say the lighthouse may be haunted.

By the late 1800s, most vessels were steam-powered and propeller-driven. With that, they preferred the openness of the Two Bush Channel into West Penobscot Bay. Before the erection of the Two Bush Island #Lighthouse in 1897, mariners steered clear of the many rocky islets around Two Bush Island.

As the #WestCoast was growing, it became necessary to light the waterways. #AlkiPoint marked the southern approach to Seattle Harbor and was an important departure point for vessel venturing south on #PugetSound. After being marked with a post light since 1887, the #Lighthouse Service established the Alki Point Lighthouse in 1913.

As the Gold Rush of 1849 sparked the development of the #SanFrancisco and the #WestCoast, lumber became a necessity. #GraysHarbor, surrounded by a dense stand of timber, would become America's leading timber port. The Lighthouse Board erected the Grays Harbor #Lighthouse to fill the need of both a coastal light and a harbor light.

Although the #CapeDisappointment #Lighthouse helped mariners locate and cross the #ColumbiaRiver bar, its location made it ineffective from vessels approaching from the north. To alleviate that issue, the #LighthouseBoard established the #NorthHead Lighthouse.
