The #KennebecRiver was an early trade corridor from the #Atlantic Coast to the interior of #Maine. In order to safeguard navigation, the Lighthouse Board established several lighthouses along its banks, including the #SquirrelPoint #Lighthouse. #tbt - Constructed in 1826, the first #FireIsland #Lighthouse on #LongIsland was not tall enough to cast its beam far enough into the Atlantic Ocean to guide vessels. A new 168' tower was built in 1858 and still stands today. Read more of the history of the Fire Island Lighthouse.

Although lighthouses had been established on #Seguin Island and Pond Island, near the mouth of the #Kennebec River, they did little to help vessels once they were in the river. In 1898, the Lighthouse Board erected the #PerkinsIsland #Lighthouse, to help vessels navigate the river. Read more of the #history of the #Perkins Island Lighthouse now.

For #ThrowBackThursday, we are visiting the Morris Island Lighthouse in Beautiful Charleston, South Carolina.

Did you know that on the night of August 31, 1886 a powerful #earthquake struck the #Charleston, #SouthCarolina area causing extensive damage. At the #MorrisIsland #Lighthouse, the massive first-order #Fresnel lens was knocked out of position, cracks were sent spiraling down the tower, and the tower was left with a permanent lean towards the Atlantic Ocean. Located at the mouth of the #KennebecRiver, is the pond-less #PondIsland. Although the origin of the name is unknown, the Pond Island #Lighthouse was established in 1821 when it was built to adequately mark the west side of the entrance of the Kennebec River. For #ThrowbackThursday, we are heading back to February 13, 2013 and the #SouthBassIsland #Lighthouse.

For vessels traveling in #LakeErie, there is a significant obstacle to navigation in the lake's western basin. An archipelago sits between #Sandusky, Ohio and Leamington, #Ontario. There are two strategic passages in which to navigate between the islands. There is the Pelee Passage on the north side or the often preferred South Passage near the Ohio shoreline, which was marked by the South Bass Island Lighthouse.

Maine's #CascoBay is dotted with many islands and rocky ledges that make navigating its waters treacherous. To mark the eastern approach into #Portland Harbor, the #Lighthouse Board erected the Ram Island Ledge Lighthouse in 1905. When the lighthouse went to public auction in 2010, it sold for an astonishing $190,000. Read more of the #history of the #RamIsland Ledge Lighthouse now.

Did you know that the keepers assigned to the #Portland Breakwater Lighthouse sometimes had to crawl the nearly 2,000 feet as there was originally no dwelling at the tower, to safely reach the #lighthouse? Conditions improved by 1886 when a railing was installed along the breakwater, and a few years after that, a small two room dwelling was built.
