I'm hoping to have my students discuss the ethical dimensions of mathematics, does anyone know of articles that either point out the potential dangers in technology, or the potential benefit of technology?

Did you know that in the expression sin(pi/6) = 1/2, both pi/6 and 1/2 are in radians? And that this could just as easily be written as sin(30) = 28.647 degrees? Sounds crazy? Not after you read this paper: http://bit.ly/VfdbdL

Ok, it still sounds crazy, but the math in the paper sounds solid. And the issues Thompson raises in the paper seem to be very closely related to this very interesting piece, where Terry Tao explains trig to a number of top-quality mathematicians. http://bit.ly/L2CkSo

If people could look over the trigonometry in this paper, and tell me if you find it coherent, I'd really appreciate it.

(I don't want to state my view, lest I bias the results.)

Whats your favorite photo?
This one is mine, 'The Commuter' , taken the day before the September 7.1 quake, in Hagley park. The light was fantastic, I really worked a process to get this too, manual mode (unusual for me then!) getting the light levels just right, several shots working towards the framing I wanted, waiting for the office worker to walk past. All the elements right there under my shutter finger. I also like it because it goes against most 'rules' of photography too.

+Noah Diffenbaugh Some of my friends on facebook are sharing this article as debunking climate change. I would be interested in hearing your comments on the article.

Does anyone know anything about using e-readers to read journal articles? Almost all recent technical papers are available in PDF, but e-readers are notoriously bad at reading PDF's, and you can't take notes. But I need to be able to read lots of journal articles, and take notes on them, but I don't want to have to print them.
