I haven't been live to an Android statue unveiling for years, so it was fun to join the crowd this afternoon! This collection includes a short video of the curtain coming down.

After 14 years of working on Google's user-facing support team, it's time for me to change things up. Starting next week I'm excited to share that I have a new job at the company!

My passion at work for the last few years has been nurturing online communities. It's time that I start giving back to the corporate culture that's done so much for me over the years, so I'll be working with Google's internal communication platforms to help foster Googler-to-Googler online communication. Since this is all internal Google stuff, I unfortunately can't share further details in public. But please be assured that this is a great fit for me with exciting career opportunities in the future!

(Googlers who may be reading this: we can't talk about or name communication platforms here in public, but if you're curious for more details feel free to ping me through work channels.)

I'm taking a vacation in NYC and had a chance to stop in on the Google Pop Up store. Great place, nice staff! And, of course, all the Google hardware you'd like to check out.

Huge news in the geek world: Christopher Tolkien, the child of JRR Tolkien and main captain of how the rights of the Tolkien Estate are used, has resigned.

Christopher was one of the world's foremost Tolkien scholars. But he was also hyper-protective of his father's work. His father sold the movie rights to The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings back in the 60s, and the movies (and their corresponding video games, RPGs, etc.) all derive from those movie rights.

Christopher famously despised most of the mass media derivations of his father's work. He loathed the very idea of the movies. He knew he'd never regain those rights his father sold, so he jealously protected everything else the estate still held. For Tolkien fans, that's why The Silmarillion (sort of the historic Bible of Middle Earth) has been entirely off-limits for content in the movies, or future tales.

But there's a wealth of other, less famous, Tolkien tales and lore set in Middle Earth. And the Silmarillion is a veritable dragon's hoard of lore. Christopher's retirement will likely open these up for development (and in fact an Amazon TV series -- JRR never sold the TV rights -- was just announced).

It will be very interesting indeed to see what Tolkien properties get developed from this point forward.
