One more reason to destroy Ontario's byzantine liquor laws. With the stroke of a regulator's pen we've ruined a novel social enterprise, stripped at-risk teens from gainful employment and undermined an entrepreneur selling a legitimate product to a thirsty market. You have to wonder, for whose benefit do we have these laws?

This is a fantastic piece of business reporting. You should read it.

I also think it nails why Apple attracts both affection and loathing from two very different kinds of consumers:

"Microsoft Windows is an incredibly customizable piece of software—users can tinker with just about every part of it. But the same customizability that gives hackers and enthusiasts the ability to do interesting things is also what brings countless ordinary users to the tech help desk, after they inadvertently delete an important system file.

There’s little such concern with something like an iPad. That device adheres to what Apple CEO Steve Jobs has called a “curated” experience. The user doesn’t see or tinker with any of the gears under the hood. They simply touch the screen, and the magic happens. Hard-core tech-heads may despise such an approach, but ordinary users love it, and they’re the much, much bigger market."

I ordered a 15 gallon pilot brewing system to expand and improve my backyard brewing in March 2013 and have been blown away by Synergy's know-how, responsiveness and reliability. In the last four months, I've brewed in excess of 20 batches and have been extremely satisfied with both the quality of the rig itself and the service provided by the Synergy team. I had a lengthy pre-order phone discussion with a staff member about the system design and functionality which ultimately gave me the confidence to make what I considered a significant investment to support my backyard hobby and passion. Synergy walked me through every step of the system design until I understood it and went out of their way to help me organize delivery and customs details (I live in Canada and they made an Oregon to Ottawa delivery quick and simple). More impressively, they've remained incredibly responsive since I received my system, even responding to my (occasionally ridiculous) questions on weekends whenever I've hit a snag. I've been very impressed. I can wholeheartedly recommend working with Synergy--they make a fantastic product, stand behind it and support you to get the most of it.
