Jay's CD & Hobby

It’s the return of LAZER’s Walking Fed Zombie Food Drive presented by Jay’s CD & Hobby. On April 2, zombies will invade Des Moines. Instead of brains, they want your cash & food donations. In 2015, the zombie horde collected over 7,500 lbs. of food to help create over 24,000 meals for patrons of the Food Bank of Iowa.
Donating is easy:
Stop by Jay’s SE 14th Street location between 12:00pm and 6:00pm on April 2 and zombies will take your donation. You can also take advantage of great onsite donation incentives like 20% off anything in store at Jay’s if you dress up and donate and even the chance to win Slipknot Tickets!
Can’t make it on April 2nd? “Make Jay Pay” and drop off cash or canned food at any Jay’s CD & Hobby location until April 2nd. Jay will match your cash donations or give $1 for each can of food donated to the Food Bank of Iowa (or a maximum donation of $10,000).
Why are donations for the Food Bank of Iowa important in April?
- Spring time is the slowest period for donations at the Food Bank
- Summer time is the highest time of need for food insecure children
- More than 180,000 Iowans helped by the Food Bank are food insecure
- 1 in 8 Iowans and 1 in 5 kids is food insecure
- Last year, the Food Bank of Iowa provided more than 11 million lbs. of food to Iowans in need
- For every $1 donation, The Food Bank of Iowa can provide 4.5 meals
LAZER’s Walking Fed Food Drive and Jay’s CD & Hobby are proud supporters of the Food Bank of Iowa. The Food Bank of Iowa strives to meet the critical needs of a diverse population through its network of 390 partner agencies in 55 Iowa counties. The partner agencies include food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters and shelters for victims of domestic violence, non-profit day care and residential care centers, as well as child and senior programs including their School Pantry program.

Been a customer of Jay's since it opened after the local store at the time (Bob's Baseball Cards) closed up shop. It's always had a nice atmosphere and I've never failed to go in and find something I think I can't live without. Looking forward to many more years of good times.

I've been going to Jay's for my comic book needs for over five years. I have them pull the books I want so I never miss an issue. They will even add a book I might be interested in and there is no obligation to buy it, but most often it turns out I wanted that book too! The back issue at Jay's are incredible, There is a large inventory of books and it always seems to be rotating because every week there is something new and different to look at. The staff is great and knowledgeable and sometimes Jay is even there to great you. Plenty of cool comic related toys and other stuff like movies and games, the Frisbee golf selection is awesome too.

Much bigger than you'd expect from the outside. So much stuff it'd be easy to get lost for hours. Even if you don't buy anything, it's a great experience.

This is a place that likes to push ‘store credit’ instead of giving you cash, and even then they lean heavily towards every opportunity to take advantage of you. Even when they do offer cash, they simply base their quote on the halving the lowest opening bid they find on Ebay (apparently, they do not know the difference between an auction and retail). Knowing this from previous dealings, I called ahead to see if they would pay cash for my DVD collection of a popular television series (I needed gas money, and thought it unwise to waste gas on a ‘maybe’). I was told that they would, most likely, based on the attractiveness of the DVD’s. So, I gathered up my collection, went inside the store, and on my way to the back (where the offers are made), I looked at what they had to sell that matched what I had in my hand. They had one incomplete collection that they were selling for $13.99 per season. Instead of a quote, however, I was told that since they had so many of what I was trying to sell, they could only offer me ‘store credit’, and that since they only sold them for $6 a season, I would only get a couple bucks for each season set. Whether the employees lack basic ethics or job competence, this is one establishment you should avoid unless you enjoy being fleeced.

So many great items, very well priced, awesome , friendly Staff! LOVE it !!!! Not sure why some are leaving over priced comments, I truly believe some of the best items and prices by far! I think it is hilarious when they say better prices on Ebay, because they sell on Ebay also!! Look at the rating people< talk to the owner before bashing this business, I have been going there for 9 years now, and I know most of the employees, and fankley, some bad ass individuals! Hands down, go check it out!!!

They have a very nice selection of stuff, and i have bought a few items from there that were damaged that they were happy to replace with a receipt but every time I have gone the the employees were always rude. Also the store is pretty under organized. Although at there Valley West Location everything is in nice order and the employees are very helpful.
