I think the conclusion in the linked article comes off as incredibly banal: "That's because Apple collects more money than it spends, while the U.S. government does not."

Come to think of it, the conclusion was probably due to the editorial slant/perceivèd slant of its readers.

I think it would've been far more interesting to observe that AAPL refuses to give dividends, while the US government strives to give tax breaks at every chance.

[reposted from Twitter because I struggled so much to get the character count down]

So yesterday I launched It listens for tweets mentioning a band or artist, collects statistics on it, and displays those in real-time.

It's highly dynamic, automatically updating several times a minute with tweets that come in. Although people enjoy the old-skool green-on-black terminal aesthetic (it was born of necessity—having been prototyped at a Music Hack Day in ~8 hours), I'm most proud of the architecture: it's served entirely from static files by nginx. The back end uses (my) Twitstream, Redis, and Celery (calling out to the Echo Nest's API) to generate over 200 of those static files every minute.

The site is also its own API: each page has a (slightly richer) JSON representation so that more talented/motivated GUI wizards and data junkies can show the same data their own way.

I think +kenyatta cheese's essay/mini-rant/review on Transformers 3 is just fantastic, and worth a quick read. Michael Bay == Busby Berkeley. Yes.

Hey, are there any over-30s here who are keen NASA TV watchers?

Been musing about this on Twitter—I think living through the Challenger disaster (I was a very geeky 12-year-old at the time) really cut my excitement and awe for the launches. It's heartening to see younger friends and colleagues have that excitement, but I never put my finger on why I didn't share in it until now.

Question by reporter "do you think open systems will ever beat Apple's closed system?" my answer, "yes, eventually". Headline Of today's newspaper in Spain, "Apple is going to die - Ito"

Thanks to +Eric Florenzano for passing this one on. First time really using in anger.
You can use the mobile interface to have a nice, slim, minimum-width timeline version of Google+ to go right alongside Tweetie (and Sparrow).

Just add the app in Fluid, add this custom user agent

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7

Oh—and make sure to allow browsing to all URLs.

I wanted to re-share this post as well as the thread attached to it.

Google doesn't bother with notifications from serial circle-adders, I see. Another thing learned from the competition.
