http://www.apex-magazine.com/if-you-were-a-dinosaur-my-love/ This story by Rachel Swirsky just won the 2013 Nebula Award for Short Story. Well-deserved, and you should all read it! (warning: suddenly emotional, may lead to tears)

Playing with new toys is the best. There are some significant improvements in the EV3 from the NXT. Also some not-so-great changes and some puzzling ones. Always the way.
We borrowed a couple of EV3s and spent half the morning playing with them :)

The door is open! (and I am sorting Lego and emailing schools so an interruption would be welcome :) )
Anyone at UQ wanting to sign up or chat about Robogals, Betsy is in 78-204D between now and 1pm :)

"Code culture, it measures you by how much you know about code. Status equals intellect and mastery and this was a big part of why, despite frankly excelling at (and liking) the required intro programming class in college, I had not one second’s interest in being a CS major: the cost of that was sleeping all day and staying up all night in a windowless basement room, mainlining Doritos and Mountain Dew while battling to prove your status by showing off your mastery of fine details of memory allocation in C, or what-have-you. And not only could I simply not play that game — not having spent my adolescence memorizing those details and not having the kind of brain that does fine detail recall anyway — I couldn’t see why I’d want to (all-nighters and Mountain Dew? really?!)."

^ This. I have very rarely felt comfortable or adequate or like I belong in a coding community. This is a part of it.

Win8 autocorrect thinks 'Indooroopilly' (Brisbane suburb) should be 'hydroponically'. Android says 'indoor oops'. I'm still laughing.

I've just switched to the Australian Kindle store. I hope I won't regret it! Am really looking forward to (hopefully) no more international transaction fees on ebooks. It's a pain that the Australian store isn't complete and isn't well-integrated though - I can't add things to my wishlist on it, and can only view my wishlist at amazon.com still. But it's a step in the right direction, and removes one of the reasons why I was going to not buy another Kindle.
