The Texas Observer's Emily DePrang and I worked diligently to report on the current Texas child welfare system's problems, with a focus on child safety. In fiscal year 2013 there was a high number of child abuse and neglect deaths of children who were in foster care at the time.

Our article chronicles the story of one former foster youth, Crystal Bentley, as she was moved between traumatizing placements. Her narrative is incredibly representative of the multiple faults in the Texas child welfare system. Our article also untangles the intricate statewide initiative to privatize and reform foster care and discusses why advocates and some legislators are worried this new system redesign will make things worse, not better.
Texas’ foster care reforms were supposed to fix a deadly system. Instead, they might make it worse.

Becoming a social media maven... slowly.
Multimedia Journalist

I have reported on border colonias, K-12 education finance and voting rights in Texas. I've reported on post-apartheid shack-dwellers in South Africa and Kenya's poor sanitation and health conditions. I most recently covered the raucous 83rd Texas legislative session for the Texas Observer in 2013.

I've participated in the Fellowships at Auschwitz for the Study of Professional Ethics as a 2013 Journalism summer fellow in Germany and Poland, where I and 13 other journalists discussed ethical issues in contemporary journalism and the media during the Holocaust. I will be an Online News Association Conference Student Newsroom participant in October 2013.

I've been published in the Dallas Morning News and the Texas Observer magazine, online and on-air through KUT News 90.5 FM, and online through Culture Map Austin and Reporting Texas. I'm currently working toward my Master's degree in journalism at UT-Austin.

I'm always looking for freelance photo, print, online, video and data opportunities. I'm available to report on K-12 and higher education, gender/sexuality, women’s health, guns, Texas and freedom of information.
