The longer I practice contemplative photography the fewer photographs I seem to make. I have an exercise called "visual listening" that helps me quiet my mind and focus my attention. I even do small sketches of the landscape to slow me down and help m distill the essence of what I see. Do not be like a stone that skips across the surface of a pond; sink down deep and look from the inside out.

“Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak.”

“The way we see things is affected by what we know or what we believe.”

“We never look at just one thing; we are always looking at the relation between things and ourselves.”

“The photographer’s way of seeing is reflected in his choice of subject.”

I've read many of these myself. You might find a bit of inspiration for 2017 on this shelf.
