January 16th is National Religious Freedom Day in the US. The day commemorates the Virginia General Assembly’s adoption of Thomas Jefferson’s landmark Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom on January 16, 1786. Today we have many issues with religious freedom. One issue is that some people in this country want religious freedom to be for their religion only. Religious freedom should be for all of us.

Today is the 45th anniversary of the first Earth Day. It’s a time to draw attention to climate change and other environmental threats to the planet. That is a good thing to do but the planet doesn’t need all the help, we do. Instead of using economic arguments to explain the harm of climate change, we need to lead with the very real human costs of climate change.

One of the constant gnats of contention in the Humanist movement is the a struggle between people who want to have a complete, clean break from religion and those who complain about humanists mocking or ridiculing religion. In a recent blog post, PZ Myers makes some excellent points why secular humanism is not just a replacement for religion.

I read an essay last night from James Croft about his thoughts after attending the recent American Humanist Association (AHA) convention. Titled ‘Beyond Secularism’, Croft complains that the AHA focuses too much on secularism and not enough on the issues he feels are more important. While I agree that we should be addressing more than ‘just’ secularism. I disagree with Croft’s assessment of the problem – if there is one.

On Tuesday December 10th, the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) released a report titled ‘The IHEU Freedom of Thought Report 2013′ which focused specifically on the rights, legal status, and discrimination against Humanists, atheists and the non-religious in every country in the world. While the worse result of being a freethinker could be death, there was some kind of discrimination in most countries including the United States.

Steven Newton over at the National Center for Science Education’s (NCSE) ‘Science League of America’ blog is doing a series of posts that refute some of the common arguments creationists use about the Grand Canyon to prove their silly ideas. In the post answering the claim that the rocks in the Grand Canyon were put there by Noah’s Flood, Newton takes down the claim in a convincing manner. He shows the large stretch creationists have to make to push their idea that the rocks were left by the ‘great’ flood.

Noam Chomsky's recent Dewey Lecture contained some obvious Humanist principles we should all support. The title caught my eye 'What Is the Common Good?'. I was interested in Chomsky's idea that a reasonable definition of the common good was a democratic social order based on workers' control, respecting the dignity of the producer as a genuine person, and not a tool in the hands of others. In this way humans would be fulfilling our just aspirations. It isn't currently what we have in the United States.
