And so it's finished. A portrait of Admiral María Josefa Martínez y Lopegarcía. This picture is of Admiral Martínez while she was serving as commander-in-chief of the military forces of the Principality of Asturias. She wears a GCEF naval uniform, with the badge of the Asturian military on her left arm. She holds the ceremonial sword of the commander of the Asturian military, bestowed by the Royal Prince of Asturias, who can be seen in the portrait on the right. On the left is a painting of the Lopegarcía family plantations in Oviedo. Among her many military decorations, Martínez wears the Order of the Double-headed Eagle of the City States of New Deutschland, the Order of the Tower of Belém of the City States of the Counts of Lusitania, and most prominently, the Order of the Torre del Oro of the Iberian Peninsula.

Haven't been doing a whole lot of drawing over the last few months. I've been busy with other stuff, although I have been doing a fair amount of art-related writing. In fact, this piece, which I started over a year ago and have only just gotten around to restarting, is related to one of the articles I've been writing. This is Admiral María Josefa Martínez y Lopegarcía, an admiral in the GCEF Navy. She figures quite heavily in several key events in the history of my post-apocalyptic world. As you can see, work is still in progress...

I doubt if anyone even remembers this one. I posted the pencil stage of this picture back in July of last year. I only got around to finishing it a short while ago. I haven't gotten round to giving it a title or writing up its background information yet, but it's a cleric of the Malthusian Order of the Church of Social Darwinism. The Order of St. Malthus has historically been the militant branch of the Church of Social Darwinism, but are also charged with various clerical duties. They are distinguished by their black vestments, as opposed to the Order of St. Galton, the highest order of the Church's clergy responsible for sacerdotal functions, whose vestments are primarily white.

Hello all. I've been posting 12x12 pieces for ages, so I thought I'd better post something else. This is a piece I made a while ago. Its title is "An employee of Dhanadhipati Shipbreaking Ltd., photographed at the Chittagong Ship Breaking District by Lewis Hagel for Imperial Ethnographic Magazine". It was supposed to be for an exhibition, but I didn't get it done in time. No matter.

The picture itself is based off a photograph taken by famous photographer Steve McCurry (of the Afghan Girl fame), though the location has been changed. The overall idea of the picture came from an article I read in National Geographic some time ago about the ship-breaking industry in Chittagong. If you're interested, it's well worth looking up. Indeed, you can even see the yards on Google Earth, but it doesn't quite convey how awful it is to work in such a place...

Hello all. This piece is entitled "September 3290 Web Banner Advertisement for the PL-7000 tablet computer and the PL-7000 mini smartphone produced and marketed by Pulao Technologies Co. Ltd." This picture actually appears within two of my other pictures that I've posted since June. I wonder how many people can find it? Aside from that, for those among you of a curious nature, Pulao is one of the nine sons of the dragon in Chinese mythology, and is often depicted on top of bells. Well worth researching, and finding out about the dragon's other eight sons. More information about this piece below:

"... according to insiders Pulao Technologies Co. Ltd. has acquired the rights to provide web-connectivity services in and around the city of Mogadishu. This comes after last week’s announcement that the company has purchased a controlling share in Qafár Telecom, giving them full control over all telecommunications services in Djibouti City. This buyout was strongly opposed by the American Empire, who maintain the anti-piracy military base Fort Lemonnier. Representatives of the American Empire in Djibouti City cited security concerns with regards to allowing a company based in the Hong Kong-Guangzhou Metropolitan Zone unrestricted access to all telecommunications data in the area. Despite assurances from representatives of Pulao Technologies that no such security risk exists, the Imperial American Army have begun working on securing their own closed communications network within the base. With respect to their expansion into Mogadishu, this means that Pulao Technologies will be able to gain revenue not only from the Mogadishan domestic market, but also from forces stationed at De Vecchi Fort, a GCEF Special Naval Defence Facility. Pulao Technologies are already the largest suppliers of telecommunications equipment along the east coast of the African Continent, and the expansion of their services’ portfolio indicates that they could be aiming for a total monopoly within the region in the next few years. Pulao Technologies are also the largest telecommunications provider in the Eastern GCEF, and have been aggressively expanding their reach internationally for the past eight years. Critics have accused the company of collusion with the Eastern GCEF military with the aim of facilitating hacking. They have also accused the company of widespread intellectual theft and industrial espionage, claims Pulao Technologies strongly deny. Further, representatives of the company have counter-claimed that such critics, such as the American Empire and the Obake Neo-Zaibatsu Conglomerates, are themselves engaged in these very practices...

So, two weeks ago I posted the O-Suzumebachi Aerial Attack Drone, so this week I'm going to do a post about the company that makes it: Jorōgumo. It takes its name from a Japanese mythical creature, with "gumo" meaning "spider" in one version of the name. The little fellas swarming around the central figure are Tsuchigumo, a signature product of the company. The picture is entitled "Billboard Advertisement for the Jorōgumo Corporation's January 3290 Advertising Campaign". You can learn more about Jorōgumo below.

"... Jorōgumo is one of the youngest of the Obake Neo-Zaibatsu Conglomerates’ large corporations. Founded on 24 December 3258, it got its start when a group of robotics and computer enthusiasts, who were at the time living in Mitaka-shi, Shin-Edo sub-metropolis, came together and began working on small scale robotics projects for the recreational market. But as their creations became more popular, they moved beyond their intended audience of like-minded robotics enthusiasts. Also, the group began to attract more personnel who wished to be involved directly in their projects, and thus the business began to grow. As more and more talented technicians joined their ranks the sophistication of the products they were producing also grew. Soon their products were making their way into the mainstream market, and the team realised that there was a demand for more advanced robotics both in the domestic appliances market and in the luxury appliances market. As the business grew, however, the group realised that they were lacking anyone with the business acumen to actually run and market the business at such a level. Saigō Masako, at that time a mid-ranking executive at Gyūki Arms and Armaments Corporation, saw the potential in what was at the time a small start-up and forfeited a secure job at Gyūki for a high-risk position at Jorōgumo. Unusually for a corporate figure she did not demand complete control of the business on accepting the position. Instead she recognised that the technicians themselves were best situated to decide on what projects to work on, while she would focus on where those products could be placed. The company’s big break came in 3262, when their computer technicians created the first iteration of the Tsuchigumo AI. Far more advanced than anything that had come before it, its success transformed what had been a medium-sized company into a major corporation in a matter of a few years. The AI developed at Jorōgumo continues to be way ahead of anything produced by their competition...

Hello all. I don't know if you remember my post from the 28th July. The one of the guy piloting a drone aircraft. Well, if you were, by any chance, wondering what kind of aircraft he was piloting, look no further. This is an O-Suzumebachi Aerial Attack Drone. O-Suzumebachi is the Japanese word for the Japanese giant hornet, or, to translate it literally, the "giant sparrow bee". Look them up, they're terrifying... More information on the O-Suzumebachi below:

O-Suzumebachi Aerial Attack Drone.

... By 3280, having overseen a massive overhaul of the Obake Neo-Zaibatsu Conglomerates’ ground forces, Admiral Sakamoto Umetaro turned his attention towards their air force. The Obake air forces were severely out-dated, and for the most part the military had been relying on support from allies, in particular the AESF, to maintain any kind of air superiority during military campaigns. Two options were available: buy new military hardware from a foreign supplier, such as the AESF’s Olympus Corporation; or encourage domestic suppliers to develop new aerial weaponry. Admiral Sakamoto promoted the latter option. To that end he initiated the Fūjin Project in 3281, tendering research contracts for the development of air superiority solutions. After much competition the contract was awarded to the Jorōgumo Corporation, who proposed the development of aerial drone technology. In 3286 they completed development of the prototype Suzumebachi aerial attack drone. This aerial combat weapon was a complete departure from standard air superiority tactics. First of all, it was mostly autonomous, operated by the Yaoyorozu no Kami hive mind AI system, which had been developed the previous year specifically for the project. Secondly, the drone was designed with the primary aim of attacking and disabling enemy airships rather than combating ground forces. The Suzumebachi proved to be a highly successful weapon, with mass production starting in late 3286, but it soon became clear that there was a need for a unit that could counter enemy armour on the ground. Therefore in 3288 Jorōgumo began working on the O-Suzumebachi, a heavier variant of the Suzumebachi. This project soon became part of the larger Dogū Project, an initiative to develop remotely piloted vehicles. Alongside the design of the hardware elements of the O-Suzumebachi, the Ningyōzukai System, a new and highly advanced interface system for the remote control of drone vehicles, was produced. Unlike the Suzumebachi, which is deployed in swarms, the O-Suzumebachi is used in small flight teams. These teams are trained to perform surgical strikes on enemy targets...

Hello all. So this piece is connected to the last one I posted. It's entitled "Poster for the 3291 Academic Year Enrolment Drive entitled ‘Future’ for Toegye Seowon, featuring ChunHyang of the idol group Aim For Star". It advertises the school that you would have seen in the picture I posted back on the 30th June. Just to let you know (because not everyone who I've talked to about this picture got this) both of the women in this picture are ChunHyang; just an older and younger version.

Chunhyang is a character from a Korean musical folktale (or pansori) called Chunhyangga. All of the members of Aim For Star are also named after characters from that folktale. The other two members are HyangDan and WolMae. More information on the piece is below:

Hello everyone. Anyone remember that tiger-headed coat of arms I posted back in March? You'll find it here: https://markdohertyart.com/blog/coat-arms-city-states-sin-baekje It was going to be used as the Coat of Arms of the City States of Sin-Baekje; a federation of city states in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. Well, here is the picture that preliminary sketch was for. See if you can find it. The piece is entitled "Councillor Seo Yoon-hee, Minister for Education of the City States of Sin-Baekje". See below for more information about the Councillor herself, as well as about the City States of Sin-Baekje...

"... Seo Yoon-hee was born on 29 October 3238 in Angang-eup, Pohang-Gyeongju Metropolitan Zone. A member of the prominent Seo family, she is the eldest of two children. At the age of two she was admitted to the Hoejae Seodang (private primary education institute), progressing from there to the Ugye Seowon when her family moved to the Seoul-Incheon Metropolitan Zone. After passing the university admission examinations with distinction, she was admitted to the prestigious Sejong Daewang University where she studied Law and Public Administration. In 3260 she sat for the civil service examinations which she passed with honours. Her results gained her an honoured post within the Ministry for Health, where she worked tirelessly for the next three years. She was then promoted to the Office of the Inspector General and assigned to oversee the upgrading of the healthcare infrastructure of Busan-Ulsan-Changwon Metropolitan Zone. This position brought with it not only a wealth of experience and prestige, but also allowed for the formation of a number of important political and corporate connections. With the completion of the upgrades two years later, Seo was recalled to the Seoul-Incheon Metropolitan Zone to oversee the administration of the city state’s educational facilities. Five years later she attained to the rank of Inspector General. After serving in this position for ten years she transferred to the Office of Special Advisors to the State Council, serving there for three years. At this time she was appointed to the rank of State Councillor, the youngest inductee to the State Council in its history. She is currently serving in the position of Minister for Education, having been appointed to that office in 3290...

Hello all. For any of you who may be wondering why I haven't been posting on my website markdohertyart.com over the last few months, the website was having technical difficulties, but it's back up and running now.

This piece is entitled "Xing Tian Corporate Logo Statue, located in front of the main entrance to the headquarters of Xing Tian Robotics, Shēngxiào Business Plaza, Beijing-Shanghai Metropolitan Zone."

Xing Tian is one of the coolest and most bizarre Chinese mythological figures I have ever read about. I highly recommend looking it up; it's guaranteed to give you a laugh.

Information about the piece:

"... Demand for armoured exoskeletons and powered suits among military and law enforcement agencies has been on the rise in recent years, and a number of companies have responded to this. Less conspicuous has been the demand for said products among small armies, militias and irregular forces engaged in low-intensity conflicts. However, such a demand does exist. It stands to reason that such forces would not necessarily have the funds to procure the high-end equipment supplied by companies like the Olympus Corporation or Baekho Heavy Industries. Therefore a gap in the market existed which needed to be filled, and into that gap stepped Xing Tian Robotics. Founded in 3281 by a group of ex-military engineers, the company’s first project was the manufacture of cheaper alternatives in construction robots. It quickly found that while the Eastern GCEF’s markets were already relatively saturated, the market for cheap robotics on the African Continent was extremely lucrative and largely untapped. Xing Tian therefore began to focus its efforts on building a trade network there, first by cultivating local contacts and middlemen for trade deals, and then by establishing headquarters in major urban centres. Once established, the company then began testing the waters to ascertain what other undiscovered markets for cheap robotics solutions were to be found. Marketing analysts working for Xing Tian soon realised that both mining and military applications were the areas with the greatest potential, and the company began to focus their research and development on these fields. The first product to be realised was the Jin Chan C-1, a mining and excavation drone which cost a fraction of the price of most of its competitors, such as the Olympus Corporation’s Kéntauros V810. This proved a massive success, and boosted the company’s reputation enormously with potential buyers. The success of the Jin Chan C-1 was followed by that of the Xing Tian S-367 powered exoskeleton, which debuted at the Falak Arms Fair in the Emirate of Aden and quickly found buyers among numerous regional warlords and local militias..."
