(sorry for repeat from facebook if you're my "friend" there) Inspired by the ISCA "Hall of Fame", I decided to get some statistics on SOSP/OSDI authorship. The result is this blog post on who has been most prolific at SOSP/OSDI over the years (the Systems "Top 50"), as well as a few other statistics. Enjoy!

After doing this for systems (namely SOSP/OSDI), I couldn't help but broaded it a bit (to include architecture, storage, networking, storage, security, and programming languages). Thus I give you ZIPS; enjoy!

+Frank Dabek - Since going to Google, +Matt Welsh  has been pretty vocal about this changed perspective also;  c.f., http://matt-welsh.blogspot.com/2013/05/what-i-wish-systems-researchers-would.html

I don't know what effect his posts are going to have, but if we toss out some of the obvious flame bait in the post, I really appreciate him making them.  I, and I think many academics, really want to be told when we're not wearing pants.  We also want to be able to go on walking down the street pantless when it's fun, but I think it's incredibly healthy to have a mix of input from the real world and the freedom to selectively choose which of it to listen to.  Too much listening and we're just reinventing what Google did, better, five years ago.  Too little listening and we're assuming that the world is a spherical cow.  (Or, too little listening and we're writing more papers about Map Reduce that will get +john wilkes to beat us over the heads about doing something interesting. :-)

So, I've said it before, but:  Please please please don't stop talking.  Talk more.  We don't hear enough from people in your position of doing interesting and real-world work.  +Jeff Dean and +Luiz André Barroso 's "Tail at Scale" is a great example -- I fully expect to see the systems community do an overcorrection on this front, with 99.9%ile latency showing up in 3x more SOSP papers than it did a few years ago -- and then gradually figure out how to digest this aspect of Google-scale challenges into the way they think about things on an ongoing basis.  There are more academics to influence than Frans, PDOS being the center of the universe aside. :-)
