A Little Acid Turns Mouse Blood Into Brain, Heart And Stem Cells

"Biologist Haruko Obokata and her colleagues at the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology say they've figured out a fast, easy way to make the most powerful cells in the world — embryonic stem cells — from just one blood cell.

The trick? Put white blood cells from a baby mouse in a mild acid solution, Obokata and her team report Wednesday in the journal Nature. Eventually a few stem cells emerge that can turn into any other cell in the body — skin, heart, liver or neurons, you name it."

Magic Sand or Hydrophobic Sand

Magic sand, Moon Sand, Mars Sand, Space Sand, Sqand or Aqua Sand is a toy made from sand coated with a hydrophobic compound. The presence of this hydrophobic compound causes the grains of sand to adhere to one another and form cylinders (to minimize surface area) when exposed to water. As soon as the sand is taken out of water, it is completely dry and flows freely.

These properties are achieved by covering ordinary beach sand, which contains tiny particles of pure silica, and exposing them to vapors of trimethylsilanol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trimethylsilanol), an organosilicon compound. Upon exposure, the trimethylsilane compound bonds to the silica particles while forming water. The exteriors of the sand grains are thus coated with hydrophobic groups.

Magic sand was originally developed to trap ocean oil spills near the shore. This would be done by sprinkling Magic sand on floating petroleum, which would then mix with the oil and make it heavy enough to sink. However, due to the expense of production, it is not being used for this purpose. It has also been tested by utility companies in the Arctic areas as a foundation for junction boxes, as it never freezes. It can be also used as an aerating medium for potted plants.

Magic sand is made in blue, green, or red in colors but appears silvery in water because of a layer of air that forms around the sand, making it unable to get wet.

Earliest reference to waterproof sand can be found in a 1915 book called The Boy Mechanic Book 2 put out by Popular Mechanics. The Boy Mechanic states waterproof sand was invented by East Indian magicians. The sand was made by mixing heated sand with melted wax. The wax would repel the water when the sand was exposed to water.

The global learning crisis is costing $129 billion a year and will last for generations unless urgent action is taken, says the latest Education for All Global Monitoring Report, released on Wednesday.

A quarter of young people in poor countries unable to read a sentence and in a third of countries analysed, less than 75% of teachers are trained.

Introduction

I am an image and business consultant providing services in branding and marketing for individuals and companies.  In addition to being a consultant, I’m also a business broker and real estate agent with a focus on commercial real estate in retail, manufacturing and the energy sectors.  I have a diversified skill set that has allowed me to work with everyone from clients that are just getting started, to more established clients on multi-million dollar projects.  My skills include a background in construction, computer programing, work in the oil and gas industries as well as owning and operating a manufacturing facility, print shop, and retail stores in major indoor malls and outdoor shopping centers. By having such a broad skill base I can assist my clients in achieving their dreams from the conception of an idea, all the way to providing an exit strategy when it's time to sell.  My company and network of partners help in the launching of physical locations, while providing all the printing and marketing materials needed to bring the customers they need to become established.  Coordinating and completing large detailed projects is challenge I enjoy.

On a more personal note,  I am an ordained minister and try to donate time and money to projects and ministries that benefit our local community first and our global communities second. Personally I practice being a conscious consumer and social entrepreneur while encouraging those around me to do the same.  My greatest interests are in education.  Among my favorite topics are health, nutrition, religion, politics, and science.  Continuing my education and using it to help or teach others is a true passion of mine.  It's my belief that the things we invest in on a daily basis locally have a tremendous impact on the world as a whole, and that providing education to everyone is the first step to making the world a better place.

Bragging rights
I have wonderful parents who did an amazing job at raising my brother and I.
