You are right that there aren't great stats. I got that number from the Washington Post which has been working on a project to track these numbers for a decade, but the laws are structured in such a way to make reports of death by police officers confusing or non existent in many areas. I could find you the names of the people who were killed by police this week, who have families and friends who loved and relied on them. But I won't.
Because you lost a friend. And a fellow officer you worked with. I'm deeply deeply sorry for your loss, and the loss of the families and friends of the other officers killed in the line of duty. I don't pretend to know how you are feeling about this.
But I will continue to fight for a world where when a police officer is killed or kills a civilian, it is truly newsworthy because it never happens. Let's be angry at the government that fails to enact protections to keep us safe.
