Grendel's Den opened in 1971 by Herbert and Sue Kuelzer. Their daughter Kari started running the restaurant in 2003. Grendel's is known as a "dyed-in-the-wool Harvard Square place" and is known to the Cambridge and Harvard University community as a comfortable, down-to-earth place to have food and drinks at fabulous prices. In 1982, Grendel's won an historic court case in the US Supreme Court, which enabled us to use our liqour license and changed existing laws in 9 states.
Grendel's Den prides itself on an hand-picked selection of imported and domestic beers from breweries large and small. You will find drinkable, flavorful local gems, far-flung discoveries, and customer favorites from classics like Guinness to 'cheap' stuff like 'Gansett. We take our food as seriously as we do our beer and make all of our menu items fresh from Grendel's own recipes. We are located in a basement hideaway on the cobbled walkways of Winthrop Street.

Love this place, the food is good and the half price deals they offer are great. Really good selection of beers, great outside seating, and friendly staff. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this for a casual night out with friends. Something they don't have: TVs; and I love it.

The brunch is pretty good and pretty cheap, and the location is really good, too. The atmosphere of the place feels sort of movie-like, almost to a comical degree, but it's fun in that way. The place is absolutely packed on 'going out' nights when school is in session. Certainly a place to avoid if you arrive past 9:00pm.

While having lunch at the bar, the manager was YELLING at the bartender for something minor. She dressed him down and basically humiliated him in front of the customers. Before I left I told her it was uncomfortable and unprofessional. She just mumbled "sorry" and walked away. Turns out, she is the owner! I hope Kari doesn't humiliate her child in public like that.

Most snobby atmosphere I've ever encountered, which isn't good since it's such a tight space. Sat next to a girl at another table on the bench and was immediately sassed when my leg touched her purse. I felt uncomfortable and like I needed to move. An older waitress came over and was very short with all of us. She could tell my brother and his friend were under age and very rudely asked "and what about you, are you gonna order something or are you just gonna sit there?" Ugliest hipster spot in Boston. WILL NEVER GO BACK

I've never liked anything I've eaten here, but the drink selection is great and their Dark & Stormy is the best around. A good place to get together with friends for some casual drinks in a laid-back, pub-like atmosphere.

Went to a late brunch with my friends. I got the pasta with pesto, which came with the option to add chicken or tofu but I declined both. The pesto was housemade. For $6.75 it was a really good meal. My friends got chips and salsa, a caesar salade, and the "beggar's plate". All was excellent and it was all for less than $30! Very good all around, I would definitely come back.
