The (il)logic of improving roads ... http://youtu.be/P9BUyWVg1xI

PS +LancasterOnline - what's with requiring a Facebook login to leave comments on your site? As an option for those who want it, sure, but for it to be the only option is daft.
In the grand scheme of things, this one’s almost impossibly minor. But it’s so emblematic of life in Lancaster County, I thought you might relate.

The article is interesting. And I agree with most of it. 741 isn't much better overall as well. The addition of even more traffic lights only stalls traffic even more, and causes more congestion.

"Freeways cut off and isolate neighborhoods. We are still trying to recover from that"

I'm betting Detroit is not the only city waking up to this.

Detroit leaders start to understand the financial damage automobiles inflicted on the Motor City, begin charting a new course. #leadership
Big plans that could lessen the impact of freeways are expected in 2015

Although my innate skeptic scoffs that it's hopelessly naive, this article is thought-provoking. This quote, in particular, is worth the price of admission:

“Profit is highly important to us at Semco, and we’re as avid about it as a general is about his supplies. If provisions run out, his soldiers will die. If a company ceases to make money, it too will die. But armies are not created to feed soldiers, just as companies don’t generate income just so they can hire more employees. Food fuels the soldiers and keeps them going. Yet to serve as more than mere gun fodder, they must have a higher purpose, a reason for going through boot camp and charging the enemy in battle… This is where profit and purpose meet and, unfortunately for most organizations, it’s a head-on Humvee wreck.”_ ~ Ricardo Semler, The Seven-Day Weekend: Changing the Way Work Works_
A lot of problems in business could be solved if we could align the interests of employees and managers with owners. Is …

State Statute: A licensee shall avoid any act which may diminish public confidence in the profession and shall, at all times, conduct himself or herself, in all relations with clients and the public, so as to maintain its reputation for professional integrity.

Seems like the statute was written to benefit an entrenched lobbying group as opposed to promoting the best possible service to the public.
Last week I received a notice from the board of licensing that a complaint has been filed against my professional engineering license. The complaint indicated that I had engaged in “misconduct on the website/blog Strong Towns” for things I have written critical of the engineering profession. While this development is disappointing, it is far from surprising.

... what we really need are a few carefully chosen constraints that narrow our energy onto what really matters ...

+James Clear's article reminds me of the notion "the paradox of choice". The historical arc of human progress tends toward individuals having increased autonomy and abundance. Yet at some point, it seems, a person's well-being is enhanced by choosing to be constrained.

In 1971, a young writer graduated with his Masters degree in Journalism from Northwestern University. He spent the first…

DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME HERE This place must be run by incompetents! Second time in a week I tried to swing through the drive through for an order of fries to get me through the commute home. Both times, the drive through line barely moved in five minutes, and I never even made it to the order station. Last time I just bailed. This time I parked and went in thinking it would be quicker. Nope. Another five minutes of my life I won't get back and I still never got to place an order. This isn't 'fast food' - it's slo-o-ow service. NEVER GOING TO WASTE MY TIME HERE AGAIN!

Have stopped in for dinner twice now, and both times got incredibly good service from our server. From what we could see, all the servers were good-they were quick, friendly, and on their game. Someone is good at hiring, or training, our both!

Trinity installed our solar electric system in 2008. I always thought their workmanship looked neat and professional and hoped that was an indication of the quality of the work. Hurricane Sandy proved that it was - my neighbor's roof shingles got blown into our yards, my neighbor on the other side lost several trees, and my neighbor to the back had pretty much his entire fence knocked down … but my solar panels are sitting tight on top of my roof as pretty as you please. I am a very happy customer of Trinity Solar!
