#guae Been to the g|uae Day 2 and just learned some amazing stuff about Google+. My last post here was a question on whether G+ is dying after reading some reports on the news. But after the presentation by Timothy and Natalie, I was just stupefied. I just saw the potential that G+ in the years to come and such tight integration with search and emails and other google services, I gotta less "like" and +1 more.

I attended the G+, SEO mythbusters, live site clinic, website optimizer and the translate sessions.

The G+ session was wonderful, it was well planned, well organized, well presented in a humor filled way that captured the audience's curiosity and above all Timothy and Natalie proved how well they know Google as a company rather than just their own departments. That was the best presentation of the lot.

The next best presentation was by Adam and though he was plagued with some technical difficulties, he showed great skill in presenting the details and answered most of the audience questions in an intelligent and satisfying manner. Translate was a feature of Google I had never given much thought about and his presentation was so good that now I am sitting and googling on the logic process of the translation tool

The website optimizer session was also decently presented, though I found that Mr. Ahmed Hassan was lacking in his knowledge of other basic google products. He could answer most of the audience questions properly and some basic questions of search related issues couldn't be answered.

But, when one talks of Google and a program it organises, one basically comes with lots of expectations on lots of search related data and Luisella and Anouar seriously did disappoint me. Rather than speaking of advanced search engine optimisation techniques and finding time to answer serious questions from the audience, they were discussing more about some basic stuff like title tags and description tags (which is basically the basics of SEO) and never answered audience questions properly. They had no time to answer most of the audience's questions and some of the questions that were posed were given some seriously unrelated answers. I know that time is short, there's a schedule to keep, but being a search company, I believe these were the two sessions that should have been handled best. Both the speakers treated the audience as entry level web designers with no clue of coding standards. There were discussions about arabic text being displayed in search results from left to right and this issue could be found on discussions dating as early as 2006 from a simple Google search.

All being said, I learned some very interesting stuff, got introduced to some very nice technologies and on a whole, the day was a very fruitful one. I hope Google UAE does this more often and we will see more and more quality websites cropping up in the MENA region. I would also suggest that rather than doing an open to all levels session, G|uae does sessions based on some minimum user proficiency levels so that serious visitors are not disappointed (just a suggestion)

And, on a personal note, the best thing for me that happened here is that I am posting this on g+ and not fb :-)
