For 12 weeks, millions of viewers have watched Amy DeJong as she navigated a boat at Oxford University in England, crossed a canyon on a rope bridge in Morocco, and plowed a rice paddy in the Philippines. On Friday, viewers might see the 24-year-old Barrington High School alum win a share of a $1 million prize. DeJong has made it to the final episode of the CBS reality show "The Amazing Race," which will air at 7 p.m. Friday night.

Gov. Pat Quinn Tuesday put the brakes on legislation that would have raised speed limits on suburban tollways to 70 mph. The governor last year signed a law to raise speed limits on downstate interstates, but urban areas were excluded.

We thought this might happen yesterday, but today Keith Farnham resigned his state House seat.
State Rep. Keith Farnham resigned his legislative seat today, just days after federal officials searched the Elgin Democrat’s home and office. The letter to Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan gave no reason for the resignation, but Farnham cited “serious health issues” in a statement.

Charges upgraded against Palatine man after victim dies.
A Palatine man accused of throwing a punch that fatally injured a 26-year-old man during an altercation outside a bar is in custody on a newly filed charge of first-degree murder, police said this afternoon. Michael Platt, 35, previously faced a charge of aggravated battery stemming from allegations he struck Ryan Flannigan on July 18 in the village's downtown. Flannigan, who never regained consciousness, died his injuries Monday afternoon.

Six Flags Great America in Gurnee hosted a special preview for invited guests to experience the new Goliath wooden roller coaster Wednesday. "You've got the drop, you've got the inversion, you've got the zero-G roll," rider Mike Bare, 36, of Schaumburg, told the Daily Herald. "I mean, everything about this ride is very smooth. You'll love it."
