Like you, I read the nice reviews for Morrison House, and since it was fairly close to Brabo, I booked a room for my anniversary. I spent a lot of time researching because I wanted everything to be perfect for my wife, and I chose Morrison House based on the reviews, even though I could have gotten lodging closer to Brabo. I booked a room with a king sized bed. I received a confirmation email asking if we had any special requests - nice touch, I thought. So I asked for a bottle of champagne to be in the room when we arrived. When we arrived, there was no king bed for us - only a queen. In addition, my request for champagne was obviously out the window. My ultra-special evening was rapidly falling to pieces, thankfully saved by an outstanding dinner at Brabo. The next morning we had the continental breakfast. My wife had no fork or napkin at her setting. After we were provided with drinks, we sat. And sat. After perhaps ten or so minutes I managed to get the attendant’s attention to ask if the breakfast was a self-serve, perhaps in another room. We were informed that “it was very busy this morning” and the kitchen was somewhat backed up. (NB: for two small bowls of fruit and three pastries?) The service and attention was otherwise indifferent. When we checked out, I asked to speak to a manager. There was no manager on duty. My question didn't elicit anything else from the desk clerk (such as, "is there anything I can help you with?"), until I stated that we had some issues during our stay. We got an abrupt "I'm sorry" and were handed the manager's card. I then emailed the manager the substance of the above. I received a very apologetic phone call, followed by by an email to please accept a complimentary stay. "That's service," I thought to myself. Every business has a bad day or two. A few months later replied to the email to try and avail myself of the offer of the complimentary room. No reply. I'm crossing Morrison House off my list. I guess I'm just jinxed.

Classy facility. No free breakfast and the wine reception is just one hour. Typical Kimpton hotel in the area. Thin walls, so you can hear a neighbor from time to time. Better than the Lorien.

Wonderful place to stay. Quiet, clean, and exceptional service. It's perfect for walking around all the shops and close to the metro.

After eating at the grill / dining room: It's like the movie Ratatouille- The food is the most exciting and most delicious I've ever eaten. Steep price but it's worth the experience!

Most of the staff was clueless. The ones that were not ..which mostly pertained to the valet and bellhop were extremely helpful. Our room leaked. The outdoor noise level was a atrocious. You could hear people walking down the hall. The prices do NOT suit the room. Our maid didn't even clean our room the whole time we were there! Seriously doubt I will spend that kind of money and go back. Old Town is great but not this hotel.

It's more expensive than our usual level, so I may have been overly impressed, but it was highly comfortable and pleasant, with lots of little extras: eg, there was a free wine bar in the living room when we arrived, and lots of guests were gathered around meeting each others. If ice needed to be broken further, some brought their dogs, which are welcome in the hotel. There's coffee in the morning, the location is excellent, there's great food of all kinds in the neighborhood.

240 reviews and an average rating of five stars pretty much sums this up. Really couldn't say much more than has already been said about this hotel and this great little town. Easy to get into DC too, so if you're in the area, stay in Alexandria, and stay at Morrison House. Seconding what splq says below me about the Columbia Firehouse as well.

I could not agree more with all the positive evaluations here. In addition to the friendly and highly competent staff, I'm impressed with the great food at the restaurant and the live music on Thursday and Friday evenings: professional pianists accompany experienced singers and impromptu 'walk-ons' as they perform jazz standards and favorites from musicals. ". . . a lovely way to spend an evening, I'd like to save all my nights and spend them . . . ( here)."
