Yesterday the Ivanpah solar plant went live.  It's in the desert near Las Vegas, and uses thousands of mirrors to concentrate light onto a tower, generating heat and power.  To acknowledge the investment by Google, they reoriented some mirrors :-)

More details about the project: http://gigaom.com/2014/02/13/the-hoover-dam-of-solar-is-now-live-in-the-desert-of-california-why-its-so-important/

They've just redone and relaunched this restaurant (with help from folks from San Francisco's Slanted Door, no less), and the food and vibe are phenomenal. Stepping into Porta Costa is like going back in time, and the Roadhouse captures that authenticity. The cocktails were fantastic - had the Bees Knees, made with honey harvested by the restaurant GM. The wine selection was diverse, but didn't overwhelm, and the food blew us away. We had the pumpkin soup, with just a little kick to it; the chicken liver starter wasn't too heavy; the mussels were absolutely amazing - could live on the broth from those and bread alone. The halibut entree was very fresh, and the braised endives on the side was a taste we hadn't experienced before - don't know what they did to them exactly, but we were left wanting more. Desert selection is very simple - we were too stuffed to handle any. The ambiance was welcoming - big ceilings and a massive bar, and service was friendly and fun. All the folks running this place definitely know their stuff and you get a sense it's a labor of love.
