Crane Load Charts

Did you know that most cranes will never pick the maximum weight they are rated for?

Many people mistakenly assume that a crane is capable of rigging any load up to or equaling its tonnage rating. In fact, a crane’s tonnage rating is based on how much weight it can lift at the shortest radius from its center pin. As the load radius and angle increases, however, the crane’s lifting capacity decreases. When at maximum extension, a 45-ton crane might only be capable of rigging less than 6,000 lbs.

Every crane manufactured has a load chart specifying its rigging capabilities based on weight, radius, angle, and other factors. Always refer to a load chart when determining the appropriate crane to use for a rigging job.

Selective Demolition: Structure Stabilization

Demolition projects come in all shapes and sizes, and no two are alike. Some demolition projects are complete teardowns in which jackhammers, excavators and other heavy equipment are used to methodically take down a structure. The majority of projects, however, require only selective or partial demolition, which often requires more critical assessment and planning to ensure that a building is properly supported and stabilized to prevent accidental collapse.

All demolition projects have inherent dangers, and demolition accidents are, unfortunately, not uncommon. Many of these accidents are due to improper, inadequate, or lack of structural support during a selective demolition, partial demolition, or interior demolition project. Inexperienced or unqualified contractors are often unaware of how to properly stabilize a structure as demolition progresses and accidents occur when bearing walls or support columns are removed without providing adequate structural support. It is important to hire a contractor with skilled field technicians and engineers on staff, like R. Baker & Son All Industrial Services, to properly assess a selective or interior demolition project and provide temporary support where needed to work safely and prevent accidents.
