Last week we had a (fortunately) small wildfire in the Rio Grande bosque not far from my house. The bosque is the wooded, riparian area along the river.

I was working out in the yard and first heard a helicopter circling and circling an area just to the north. A short while later I heard many sirens. I walked to the back of my property and saw white smoke rising beyond the trees, then I saw the firefighters. I returned home to get my camera.

I stayed clear of the activity and used my telephoto lens. A bit later the county sheriff department helicopter "Metro 1" arrived on scene and began scooping water up from the Rio Grande to dump on the fire. I had the chance to get lots of photos up close as it flew overhead.

It was a beautiful day, last Sunday, in central New Mexico. Here is a Sandhill Crane flying overhead at the Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Management Area, which is run by the state.
