Hello MATE?
Before Solus, I'd never used the MATE Desktop before.
In fact, the last time I'd used such a paradigm was the actual GNOME 2.
Sure, there was the blip with Consort, my fork of GNOME Fallback. If developing Budgie has taught me one thing, is that a partial fork would always have failed. The independent components wouldn't have survived, as we now know with our migration in Budgie to increase it's reliability and featureset through furthered independence.

So, when I started assembling MATE for Solus, it definitely wasn't "for me". It felt weird, certain bugs, and a couple of things gnawed at me.
With that said, when I look at MATE as it is assembled now in Solus, I gotta say, I'm getting pretty attached to it. On my desktop (NUC) I'm far more comfortable using Budgie, but on my laptop it's now only running the MATE Desktop, with the Brisk Menu and Slate notification theme.

I guess the moral is more seeing the potential, and being willing to invest the time into that.I'm also happy to be doing it in a way that all MATE users may benefit. I think 2017 is going to be a really big year, not just for Solus, or for Budgie, but for MATE too. The Linux Desktop as a whole, really. :)

I cannot wait to see what both Solus editions look like in a few snapshots time, with further enhancements to MATE, and.. and .. Budgie 11!

Gonna make a separate post about Budgie 11 because man am I excited about it.

Back to MATE. Brisk and Slate are just the start, and will continue to improve. I have my eyes on Marco, the settings daemon, and other bits, to help modernising it.

Solus aside, can you imagine the other MATE distros in their next releases when they adopt these changes? Gonna be really cool!

Well, Facebook has shut down my profile pending an upload of an authentic government issued ID. I tried GIMP'ing an old driver's license but was still rejected...

Dear Facebook,

Goodbye.

Regards,
Rik
