Shinji is closer to people, Asuka has much less internal turmoil and Rei can actually express her emotions...even if she doesn't understand them. That's better than being unable to, like in NGE. As for Misato, she seems less dependent on physical contact than in NGE.
Of course, there's much less time for character development, but the characters seem more like "normal" teens (and young adult in the case of Misato) than the psychiatric nutcases in NGE.
