Hike - Shipwreck Coastal Trail

Sunday, July 24 · 7:30am - 1:00pm

Palos Verdes Estates
350 Paseo Del Mar
Palos Verdes Estates, CA

This Sunday, we will be hiking to the little known coastal shipwreck site
of the Greek freighter, Dominator, which ran aground at Palos Verdes point in 1961. The rusted hulk of this shipwreck is scattered along a half mile of the shoreline. Few remains have survived due to the brutal environment and minimal cleanup efforts, but nonethless, there are remains. Who knows, maybe we'll find some some treasure or run into some pirates ...on way! Doubtful, but it should be fun, because how many peeople can say that they've visited a shipwreck site, and in Southern California; Few, if any! If anyone's curious, I can tell you more about the shipwreck along the way.

The trailhead starts in the Palos Verdes Estates neighborhood, as the address is provided above and there is a link below that will take you to its whereabouts in Google Maps. We will park there, at the turnout near the cliff, then hike down a steep hill to the narrow coastal edge. We'll then walk the rocky coast and stop to take in the shipwreck remains as well as the beautiful scenery of the ocean and rocks. Along the way, we may run into seals, crabs, small non-venemous water snakes, sea urchins, and starfish, as well as annoying flies, due to the abundant seaweed in the area. The trip will be just under 5 miles and we will be walking on jagged and unstable rocks that roughly range from baseball size to manhole cover sized rocks about 90% of the time. With that being said, it is important to be safe FIRST, otherwise, you and the rest of the people hiking will not have a pleasant trip. We are starting early when the tide is low, and we'll finish well before hight-tide.

A couple of things you will need; High-top hiking boots with thick socks
because you do not want to twist your ankle or fall on jagged sharp rocks, a pair of leather gloves to stabilize urself or catch yourself if you lose your balance, pants just in case you do fall you won't cut yourself too badly, a trekking pole or two to help you get over the loose rocks, 2 or more liter of water, snacks or a small lunch you can carry with you comfortably, sunblock as we will be in direct sunlight most of the way, extra clothes to change in afterwards that u can keep in the car, a backpack to carry all of this, and last, but most importantly an optomistically postitive attitude towards yourself and others, and consideration for other hikers as well as for nature.

***** Please note that this is an ADVANCED HIKE! **************
