Seeing that previous post “The Difference 30 Years Makes: iMac with Retina 5K display vs. the Original Apple Macintosh” and the woodcut image “That tiny black-and-white rectangle crammed into the bottom-left…” reminded me I still have my old Macintosh MacPaint manual. The software, (running on floppies with the complete OS) an incredible programming feat by Apple’s Bill Atkinson contained design elements that can still be found in most graphics software today. In some way these old B&W pixels sing creative to me.

I probably first experienced the software running as LisaSketch, which later became MacPaint some time in 1983. Working at GTE in Mountain View, we had a number of Lisa computers around which cost 10K each, more than the price of a new Toyota Land Cruiser at the time.

The manual, crude in a way, is a mix of simple design (by Clement Mok) and quality-focused print production. But the images were unique and to my eye display early Apple DNA that’s still recognizable in the current-day animal. I can almost feel Steve Jobs overruling decisions about where the spot varnish will go.
