I am extremely excited to be one of the speakers of http://visualized.com/2014 in NYC in February. I am even more excited to meet so many friends again!

Thanks! And no, I have explored different ways of showing them, but eventually I stuck with alphabetically sorting the names of the cities. Other sort orders didn't really add any additional value, like population size, or number of people eligible to vote, or number of people shown up. The distance to the center is based on the similarity (Euclidian distance for the distribution of the votes) of the selected city.

So, actually, it's not very fancy... ;-)

Make your own generative jewelry using this really nice WebGL constructor/ordering system.

"So he was playing Guitar Hero with some myoelectric sensors that were wired to the stump of his arm that he had trained based on the muscle memory of what it was like to press his fingers. For me, that was a pivotal moment of thinking that's a superhero. That's a superhero moment. Playing a video game with the arm that you've lost." —Zachary Lieberman

'we apparently seem to be most attracted to sad faces' is one hypothesis, and requires a psychological approach. The second hypothesis 'we recognize more sad faces'… which is slightly different (is not that we discard something that "is happy", is that we don´t see happiness in a form it could be interpreted as happy). The third hypothesis is that there are actually, in a formal sense, more sad faces than happy ones!, and this seems to admit a formal approach… for instance, it's possible that there are more handles whose concavity points downwards? (just as an example)

The three hypothesis are very very tricky and hard to verify!

What I think can be done is some survey (the kind of "do you think this is a face, if yes it's happy, neutral or sad"… with hundreds of images). And then visualize the results… perhaps interesting results will emerge that will help us understand this riddle!

Last year, we started Eyeo Festival in Minneapolis - we had a great time hanging out with the 30+ speakers and 400+ attendees who made it the event of the year.

This year, it's going to be even better. More speakers, a new venue (The Walker Arts Center), and a full day of pre-conference workshops with the best art & technology teachers in the world.

We just announced the first part of the 2012 Eyeo speaker list, and we couldn't be more excited. You can check out the list here:
